Some specific criticism of Monty last night. I hesitate to post this because it will turn into a shite show, but I do think Rohan makes some fair points- particularly the first two and the 4th quarter no show for Davis last night complaints

Let's talk about Monty Williams though. Things he did tonight that had me screaming at my television:
quote:
Ran multiple (multiple!) Lance Thomas-Austin Rivers pick and rolls with Ryan Anderson standing completely unused, even as a decoy, in the remote, desolate, weakside corner. Thomas and Rivers are the two worst players on the floor, so this is already inexcusable. I can understand using Rivers in the P&R (he's not always awful at it) but when the roll man can't shoot and can't be expected to catch and finish and the presumed open target (Anderson) is too far removed from the play to be a beneficiary, what in the world is the point?
quote:
Guarded Kobe Bryant with Austin Rivers. This was fine the first few times, as an experiment. It became exceedingly clear very early on that two negative results were being generated -- (a) guarding Bryant with Rivers was forcing almost automatic double teams and easy ball movement for L.A., and (b) when Rivers was picked, the play was suicide because Rivers was barely big enough to defend Bryant, let alone a bigger player on a switch.
quote:
Two players on the bench on that clinching defensive meltdown? Al-Farouq Aminu, far and away the Hornets' best Kobe defender, and Anthony Davis, who's been locked out of fourth quarters for some time now.
quote:
Monty Williams is yet to figure out how to use Anderson efficiently in the half court.

AD's lack of 4th quarter playing time in January has blown my mind

right there with you
Davis was the best big on the team. he stands as good a chance as Lopez v Howard, why not challenge him to compete with a franchise center?

Ah, the Stephen Strasburg defense.

Hasn't he had to miss multiple games due to ankle injuries this season.
I call bullshite on people saying Davis has as good of chance as Lopez at stopping Howard. Just from girth alone Lopez makes it easier to keep his and 1 opportunities to just 2 foul shots and Howard shooting FT's only benefits the Hornets.

Minus last night, Smith has became the man in the fourth. He doesnt bitch foul unless he is setting a screem, he is the strongetst player downlow, his jump shot has been money, and i think the backcourt plays well with him.

Ole Monty turning into the Les Miles of the NBA world?!?!?!

Thank you!! I'm glad someone else realized the flaws in playing Rivers as a kobe defender last night. Yea he did ok but there were much better options on the bench. Monty is basically mortgaging this team on his precious Austypoo becoming a decent player

This board needs to decide what it wants. Do you want to build a solid team for the future or sacrifice that and be a mediocre team now. Rivers has potential. Rivers needs confidence. Rivers was doing decent against a league legend. Yet the board wants him out of the game. Do I want to tank? No. However if you go young which is what the club obviously wants to do then there are gonna be times where the young guys get time to attempt to grow. Last night was an attempt to allow a number 10 draft pick with the potential to be a key asset in the future to gain back some confidence that he has lost since being in the league. Aminu has been given the same chances and he has developed.

I just hate Rivers. If he actually gets good I'll change my tune, but it doesn't look likely. Most rookies who go on to be successful in the league and are getting the minutes he is have at least shown flashes by now.

Rivers actually did a pretty decent job on Kobe at the end of the game.

I guess. kobe didnt score but the Hornets doubled Kobe almost immediately, which lead to.2 or 3 swing passes, then a bucket.
that said, overall I though rivers had one of his better games last night.
all for giving him big pg minutes. not necessarily buying him guarding kobe in crunch time of a tight game with eg on the floor.
adambanks-
thats fine if it is just for development, but where was AD?
I like Monty. think hes done a good job in NO given the circumstances. the team is improving. I am certainly not calling for him to be fired and am certainly not upset they lost to the lakers. just would like to see that monty does indeed have a plan with some of these rotations.
