How come no one brought up the moneyball reasoning behind this. I think it's a perfect analogy for this instance.

Nobody has brought up your moneyball analogy because it doesn't make any fricking sense in this context.
The whole premise of Moneyball (the book, which I doubt you've read) to look for undervalued players, whether they were big names or not.
Howard is a defensive monster, rebounds at a great rate, and shoots efficiently. He would be a great asset to any team, especially the Hornets with the other pieces we would have in place around him.
