One great example is skyrim

Perfect example... I know I wanted to throw my controller through the screen with even the xbox's long wait times. If he is planning on having his steam acct (about 30 titles) and the OS on the SSD, what's the smallest he can get away with?

For the ppl saying ghz edition 7970s are the same as 7970.

False, they have larger capicitors to handle more voltage without killing te card.

Well someone recommended the MSI lightning version at 489 LINK

Can't read through the whole thread on my phone but buy a msi lighting 680 or 7970.

If you are going cheaper EVGA 670 ftw.

I keep coming back to the sabertooth at $239 but will take about a week researching others

dont waste the cash.
do you plan on running 2 vid cards? if not, you can get a cheaper z77 board that only has one x16 lane and it will perform fine

ASRock
Asus
MSI
there are 3 options under $150. all z77, usb3.0, and highly rated.

i dont know if he has room in the budget for the lightning and a ssd

given a choice between those, its a no brainer to buy the SSD and get reference 7970 at a cheaper price

I understand I won't be able to get him THE top of the line GPU but I still wanted to get him the best bang for his buck. I was seriously looking at the 670 ftw after reading the reviews on it. This is the part of building I hated the most was worrying about making a bad decision and reading the wrong review

More researching ahead I guess.

well whats your budget and how much have you already spent? in a gaming rig the GPU should be around 33% of total cost of tower components.

My favorite part of anything. I love researching products and searching for deals.

Depends on file size. Some games are a gig, or less, and some are 14gb+. I would recommend a 240-256gb drive, and expect to possible leave a few titles out. I doubt he plays all 30, and if he does, he can download them and store the files for the less-played games on a secondary drive, and copy them back into the appropriate steam folder when he wants to play them. That's what I did before getting a 256GB, but I'm now ready for a 512.

I think I will, as far as the mobo, I want to have the option of crossfire later. So I might have to spend a little more.

Almosr any z77 atx board will support it. There's no need to spend more than $200 on a mobo. Get the gigabyte ud3h or asrock extreme4

as I have stated several times I love my asrock z77 extreme 4 with my gigabyte windforce 670. You have 800 dollars left in your build for an SSD, mobo, ram, and GPU.
asrock extreme 4 for 125 at newegg
Crucial CT256M4SSD for 170
pick you brand of 2x4 gb ram for 40 dollars
that leaves you 455 for a gpu for the tax above

I won't comment on which GPU is the best for you as I have only used my current card.

I have the sapphire radeon HD 7950 and have overclocked it a bit. Haven't found anything I play that it cant handle at max with 1980x1080 HMDI

LINK

I have a 560ti that I am not using, that thing is a heat producing machine.
