SIL is a very clever, post-modern take on Shakespeare, authorship, and love--twisting the our expectations about sincerity and convention. It's also a satire of hollywood. Not sure if it's best-picture-worthy though. Then again, the choices that year aren't great. My favorite was probably Insomnia (the swedish version).

it wasn't even worthy of a nomination for best picture. of the five films nominated that year, all of these were better than Shakespeare in Love -
Saving Private Ryan
Life is Beautiful
The Thin Red Line

Why does a moral center have to be likable? Why can't the moral center be someone you hate? Isn't it more interesting to make the audience side with the immoral or, at least, against the moral character, despite everyone's general desire to appear moral?
You appear to be in a combative mood and, frankly, I'm tired of it. As I said, I wasn't making fun of you for using $10 words. I actually thought it was interesting.
You are now recharacterizing my previous posts...
You know what? frick it. I'm done.
Congratulations on wearing me out with your inane argument about Opum being a figure to be used by the boomer generation as an apology to the Greatest Generation.
You are correct. Saving Private Ryan, despite its vast accolades, is a vapid, piece of shite film that is way too overhyped. And I love it.

Do be that way. It was a good, back and forth discussion.
I think Baloo really dislikes the movie. I just think it is grossly over rated because it is about WWII and D-Day.
