Playing not to lose
Posted by DrD on 1/12/13 at 11:22 pm20
Broncos pulled an LSU and it cost them dearly just like it did the Tigers. Never have agreed with the "safe" play calling rationale/philosophy. If you have a chance to win you take it right then and there. Otherwise...
I admit Mett is certainly no Peyton Manning but hell the Denver coach didn't even let a hall of fame QB throw the ball to win the game in the last 2 minutes.
On the other side of the argument a great coach (like Harbaugh for San Francisco) just let the other team lose the game themselves by jumping offsides when they lined up on 4th down and appeared to get ready to run/pass the ball late in the game.
Who knows what might have happened had Miles lined up on 4th down late with an appearance to run the ball for 1st down against 'Bama in the hopes of drawing them offsides..... or maybe just run the damn ball or pass and get the 1st down...... Still bothers me that we didn't try to bury 'Bama right then and there. Sorry for reminiscing......

Wasn't it 4th and 8 in Bama game?
IDK how anyone can argue with the play calling in Bama game. If there was a game this year we didn't "play to lose" it was against Bama. Florida on the other hand is a different story.

Aren't you one of the same guys that was bitching out Miles for passing in the same situation against Clemson? I can never understand how people who have such little football acumen feel compelled to question every little decision a coach makes after a loss....idiots!

The game reminded me of LSU and Miles as well. The consevatism in going for the 1st down with a Hall of Fame QB, playing not to lose. The D giving up a touchdown at the end of the game with seconds left on the clock. Sure reminded me of LSU. Ouldn't close the deal.

Broncos pulled what 80% of NFL teams would've done in the same situation
FIFY
The Broncos went conservative in a huge game with Peyton effing Manning at QB. Last time I checked, we don't have a Peyton Manning at QB.

You do realize that Peyton Manning has pretty much free reign to check plays at the line of scrimmage, right? Are you sure he didn't check into a run play from a pass play? If he thought he had a better chance converting by passing, I am pretty sure, based on 10+ years of NFL history, that he would've checked to a pass play.
You are right Mett is not Peyton Manning, and LSU's coaching staff is not Denver's coaching staff, so really there is no comparison to be made between the two aside from both teams have won and lost games and both lost their last game.

They should've passed it like LSU did against Clemson... oh wait that's the wrong thing to do too.

watch the last drive. the three downs before the missed field goal were typical Les Miles, run up the gut and gain 2 yards in 3 plays. I'm not one to call out the play calling but it happened

When Miles was sending Hester up the middle to beat Fla, he was Lesticles.
Miles philosophy is based on a dominant OL. It's coming. Good Times ahead.
