You're starting a Roth IRA. You're 27 years old with a decent tolerance for risk. Your account is with Scottrade. What mutual fund(s) are you getting into for the long term?

Look into Vangaurd 500 index, as well as American Funds growth, growth and income, and international growth.

I'd say just open the roth with vangaurd and look at vanguard total stock market index or their star fund if you have less than $3k to start out with.

Don't most American Funds charge 5.75% fee up-front?

American Funds is good, but you can get same or better with the other major players - Vanguard, Fidelity, Pimco, T.Rowe, etc.

Yes, they carry a heavy front end load, which can be reduced with large investments. But, over the long term, American Funds has outperformed it's peers and their returns have more than made up for the up front cost. Plus I think they may be load waived if they're invested in a roth, not sure though.

Why don't you recommend any ETFs?

I responded with my opinion on this in another thread. I'm beginning to think you work for a brokerage, lol.

I recently found the Fidelity Contrafund (FCNTX). It's a nice large blend fund. Incepted in 1967 and has returned an average 12.16% since. The fund manager has been on it since 1990.
