Won't be long IMO.

Gene Chizik is very sad at the moment

Honestly, as bad as it is, it may depend on Chip Kelly's success

I wonder if any NFL franchises bring him in to fulfill their Rooney Rule need?

2 or 3 years. It took Kelly almost 4 to start to get looks.

I think he is a great coach but I think a lot of his success comes from Manziel. Unless he waits four years then goes to the NFL and drafts Manziel, I don't see him making it in the pros.

What about his time in Houston? Or his time at Ok State?

You didn't watch his teams at Houston did you? The man can flat out coach.

agreed. If Kelly does a Spurrier, it's going to be a while. If he tears it up, someone will want a copy cat fairly quickly.

Shouldn't he win something, of significance, first?
I mean, Kelly took a while, but at least he won major conference football titles, and top tier bowl games.

Sumlin isn't even remotely connected to Kelly IMO. Outside of the emphasis on pace, they're not very similar at all when you look at the offensive schemes.

OU, not Ok State.
I think he'll start getting some mention as early as next year. Somewhat surprised at the Chip Kelly love. It'll be interesting to see how he plays out.

I think what he meant is NFL teams will be reluctant to draw from the college ranks if Kelly doesn't work out in Cleveland. There would be too many failures with that resume (Spurrier, NTP, etc.) and it would create the perception that college coaches don't translate well to the pros.

I guess, but college coaches and rookie QBs are succeeding at an alarming rate in the pros right now. I think it goes to show how much the college game has progressed to basically a pseudo-minor league for the NFL.
And again, it's been said on here numerous times, but Spurrier's failure wasn't a condemnation of his system's inability to succeed in the NFL. It was a condemnation that you can't be on the golf course for 10 hours a week and then succeed in the NFL with a shitty roster.
And I hate Spurrier.

True. But NTP failed with the Dolphins. Butch Davis didn't work out very well in Cleveland. There are plenty of examples, and with enough of them teams will think it's more a matter of recruiting and overwhelming the opposition with superior talent.
Harbaugh in SF is a decent counter-example. Coughlin is another, but he made the jump 20 years ago. but most of the successful NFL coaches were NFL coordinators or NFL retreads.
Super Bowl winners the last 10 years:
Coughlin - Jaguars head coach
McCarthy - Saints coordinator
Payton - Cowboys coordinator
Tomlin - Vikings coordinator
Dungy - Bucs head coach
Cowher - Chiefs coordinator
Bellycheat - Browns head coach
Gruden - Raiders head coach
