The point isn't the players that Pep promoted versus the players that were already promoted. The point is that while Pep was in charge, most of the strong contributors to the team were from the academy. Xavi wasn't promoted while Pep was in charge, but he was essential to the teams success and was an academy graduate. Without the academy, Barca AND Pep would not have the same amount of success.

if he goes to a team with quality players, what does it matter whether they came from an academy or elsewhere? he's inheriting those players regardless, so i don't see how their origin matters
now, if we're talking about this as a 20 year project? then ok i can see the importance. i don't see it that way, and his time at barca didn't give him the opportunity to display this, either

let's assume he inherited the same barca team with the same resources, EXCEPT the kids in the academy
how much of a difference would that have made? busquets would have been a loss for sure. i think pedro's impact could have been replaced. thiago's as well

I have only skimmed this thread so I may be missing the point but I think what he is trying to say is that the strength of Barca is that many of their key players have grown up playing together and learning the same style/system for their entire careers. Any manager, including Pep, would benefit from that kind of setup.
I'm not sure what point you are trying to make but it seems like you are saying because only a couple of players from the academy became regular starters under Pep's watch that the academy had little impact on his success. Again, forgive me if I'm misunderstanding, but if that is in fact what you are insinuating it couldn't be farther from the truth.

Granted he never lacked in exceptional player personnel, Guardiola made some innovative tactical decisions as a manager. Great managers know how to optimize the talents of their great players.
Benching the Zlatan when it became apparent that a central playing Messi could become the GOAT. Ballsy
Moving a Masia academy centerback Busquets into the midfield to replace Yaya Toure. Decent
Letting Iniesta start out wide and then roam into the center of the park. Fairly astute
Instituting a three man backline with Dani Alves as a wingback. Not bad

In 2011, yes. In 2009 Manchester United were the favorites going into the game, featuring Cristiano Ronaldo at his perhaps highest point. In 2011, SAF's tactical decisions allowed for Barcelona to control the midfield.

if this is their point then it kind of doesn't apply when speaking of another team's academy
how are the kids graduating from man u's academy under a different regime going to have that same experience under pep's system? they won't

people forget man u was the big time favorite in that game...that was the "messi finally scored against an english club" game
man u had rooney, ronaldo, and tevez...berbatov came off the bench. vidic was in his prime and ferdinand hadn't really slipped yet. and they had VdS in goal
