"Hawthorne approaches the table, cake is in the middle with sixty NINE candles. He draws a breath, a good one actually and starts in, he's blowing HARD, fighting for air, starting right and sweeping left, still going aaaaand he gets about four blown out, looking like he'll try again."

To all of you who don't think he is the best at what he does, you must not have listened to many other announcers; especially college ball. Also, how many other announcers do all 3 major sports? You guessed it- Jim and one more. Look it up. Has he made mistakes at his craft? You bet and so have you. Give a listen to some others like Ohio state. The Mississippi schools, Alabama, whomever you like. They are putrid compared to Jim. I hope he stays TWENTY MORE YEARS. HAPPY B DAY MAN! I do some voice work on the side - some sports announcing ( much smaller level) some auctioneering and some motivational speaking. It ain't anyways easy. He really IS the best!

Believe or not Paul Finebaum said Hawthorne is the best announcer in the SEC

He did not say that. Huge difference btween being nice while saying someone is "one of the best" and making the judgement of " the best".

BTW, journalists don't sit in the press box and listen to the radio PBP. So how many games do you think Pawwl has heard Jim call? My over/ under = 1

Although Jim will always be synonymous to LSU and at the very core of every LSU sports memory I have to date going back to the late 80's. He is not nearly the best at his craft. In fact he is not even the best announcer named Jim in the state of Louisiana, for that dubious honor should be awarded to this guy.
