Intentionally losing for better playoff matchup?
Posted by Nonetheless on 11/26/12 at 6:38 pm00
Does this violate any unwritten rules?
I'm down 24, with the Panthers defense left. If I lose this week, I'll make the playoffs as the 5th seed. If I win and another opponent loses, I get the 4th seed and would have to play a better team.
I'm thinking about benching the Panthers defense, which would guarantee a loss for me this week, but would lock me into the 5th seed. I think this is better for my first round playoff matchup.

Honestly, I'll probably lose either way
Highly unlikely the Panthers D gets me 25 points tonight.

the team you are playing, in the playoffs? in the hunt? totally out of it?

If the team I play wins, they will be 6-6, like me. There would then be 5 teams at 6-6 competing for the final 2 playoff spots (one of those spots is mine due to the tiebreaker). I've outscored the other 6-6 teams by 50 points or more and that is the tiebreaker.

if the other team is fighting for the playoffs, I wouldn't do it.
if they were out of the playoffs, I would. But if the win makes then 6-6 with 5 other teams, that's kind of messed up if you are one of the other teams.

I agree with this.
Plus you're probably going to lose anyway so just start them, lose, everyone's happy

Fair enough. I'll just start them and hope for the worst.
If I get the 5th seed, the team i play next week in the 1st round will be without Gronk and perhaps Shady Mccoy.

I think it's kind of a bitch move. The point is to put up more points than the other team. Sounds like you're scared to play a solid team. If you intentionally didn't fill your roster out for this reason I probably wouldn't invite you back to the league next year. Just sayin

Never knew Jim Mora Jr posted on TD.

I guess this is where we fundamentally disagree. The point, in my opinion, is to win the championship (and the pot $$$). If intentionally losing helps those odds, I think it should be at the very least considered.
But, considering that I'm unlikely to win even if i play the panthers d, i will start them.

Assuming you put money up, this is no more than a business decision. If losing this week gives you a better chance to take the overall prize, then put yourself in the best position to do so.

Just playing, man. Have to do what sets you up so you can win.

It's bush league but still a strategy to set you up for a better shot at the championship. Tough shite for the other teams, I guess they should have won more games.
