Hypothetical From the Detroit Challenge Fiasco

I would imagine there's a stipulation to keep things like that in check.

No I think making the play non-reviewable because a coach prematurely throws a challenge flag is a stupid rule.

1) Houston runner was tackled, then got up and ran to end zone. Ruling on the field was TD.

2) All scoring plays are automatically reviewed. The Lion coach did not know this and threw the challenge flag.

3) By rule, this is an unsportsmanlike penalty - 15 yard penalty and loss of the right for the play to be reviewed.

Not really sure how the NFL would define it as unsportsmanlike.

Terrible rule. Just pick up the flag and say its already being reviewed and you don't need to throw a red flag. Or if you must punish them then just take their challenge. No reason to not review it.

I think the original post is a good one. By the letter of this stupid rule, why couldn't the scoring team throw a challenge flag to avoid the play being challenged? Technically wouldn't that be the case?

And what advantage did Detroit gain by throwing a flag?

Why would you challenge a play you scored on? Would take a lot of fore thought to say, next time we score and it looks like they could over turn the play, I'll throw the flag real fast before the booth has time to review. Sounds pretty far fetched. It was a fluke play, maybe they will change the rule in the off season. That's about it.

On a side note, if (1) you know the opposing team is out of timeouts and (2) you know that all scoring plays are reviewed and (3) you know in your heart that your knee touched the ground, then you go out of bounds on the 1 and you get away with everything.
