Buying my Mossberg 500 in 2 weeks - What ammo should i get?

im going to take it to the range for practice and just for some stress relief, so i was wondering what ammo i should get for the range, also i was wondering what ammo i should get to keep in the chamber at night, for home protection, i have heard buck shot is not good for home protection.. but i would like to get some opinions.
and no im not getting less lethal ammo, GF's parents said i should get that... i wanted to call them hippies

I have 8 birdshot in mine. The distance in which you'll most likely encounter, the bird shot will do just as much damage. Also, it wont go through walls and such as much as buckshot.
