He wants the freaking 2022 World Cup to be played during the WINTER.

quote:

The move would require all major European Leagues to take a month-long winter break, including the Premier League which has no mid-season break at all.

"I hope it will be held in winter," he said. "We have to go to Qatar when it is good for everybody to participate. What is better for the fans?"

Platini believes there is enough time to work out how to organise the domestic leagues around a winter World Cup.

"In 10 years we can manage to decide how we can postpone the season for one month," he said.

Maybe I'm totally overreacting, but this is moronic. Play it in your own leagues' offseason, like every major international tournament.

Yeah, it's going to be dangerously hot in the summer in Qatar...further proof that this host choice was awful...but moving the biggest event in sports to a few months later? WHAT?

Well if they are actually going to hold it there, which they clearly shouldn't, this is the correct decision.

Isn't the tournament itself about 4 weeks? Wouldn't they need 6 weeks or so to account for pre-tournament training?

6-8 weeks IMHO. You need at least 12-14 days of warm up matches. Afterwards the top 4-8 teams players will require a week or two more to recovery. Of course they won't get it, thereby penalizing teams for advancing.

Horrible idea plus I don't see how it would work.

Exactly. There is a reason the tournament is in the summer.

So does that mean the Confederations Cup will be in the winter also? Will they be moving two season around?

Yeah, I'm sure that's why Platini voted that way. $$$$ from Qatar had nothing to do with it...

ETA: screw "that part of the world" anyway
