I'm sure I'm not the only one who was wondering what ever happened to Wilkerson following his big injury his final year at LSU.

ESPN camp notes...

quote:

The Falcons are down to their third center, Ben Wilkerson. Alex Stepanovich suffered a back injury Monday and starter Todd McClure already was out with an injury. The severity of Stepanovich's injury probably won't be known until Tuesday. McClure was running with the team's training staff on the sidelines Monday, but still isn't completely recovered. Wilkerson likely will get the start in Saturday's preseason game against Indianapolis.

Dang, I had forgotten about that. I remember Saban's press conference when asked about that. He was none to happy.

In my opinion, Saban's absolute worst attribute as a coach was his penchant for unnecessarily leaving starters in during blowouts.

There was no reason that Wilkerson should have been in during the last few minutes of that Vanderbilt game. That needless injury cost Ben a great deal of money.

And Saban's rationale for his substitution pattern, in keeping with his utterly contumacious personality, was laughably irrational. "Players can get injured on any down," he would say. "A player could get injured on his first play of the game." That's true, but Saban forever failed to realize (or at least acknowledge) that the risk of injury is directly proportional to the number of snaps a player takes.

By removing a starter from a blowout, you reduce the number of plays he particpates in and therefore reduce the risk of needless injury.

That used to drive me INSANE.

+1. And he would never accept that it was his mistake (M. Mauck in the Florida game-LSU went 8-4 in 2002).

No kidding. Centers from LSU as a whole do pretty well, more so than the other OLine positions

Saban didn't blow teams out.

Just plain stupid. Already up 36-7. Mauck didn't need practice in the 4th qtr in handing the ball off up the middle. He knew good and well that Randall and Clausen weren't ready to be starters.

Yea, leaving Mauck in was pretty ridiculous.

The Wilkerson one is blown out of proportion, however. Should he have taken him out? Probably so, but there are a few decent why leaving Wilkerson in wasn't that horrible of a move. It ensures you don't have a messed up snap so you can hurry up and end the game already, ensuring that others don't get injured by a prolonged game. Olinemen rarely get injured in game situations, compared to other positions on the field. Centers even less so compared to guards and tackles. The vast majority of OL injuries are a result of prolonged stress on their bodies rather than one incident.

LSU fans were much too hard on Saban for keeping Wilkerson in. It was a mistake, but it was moreso a fluke.

I do appreciate NS for what he did at LSU but he showed his true character by REFUSE to accept his mistakes in these 2 games.

Heck, we are all human. Nothing wrong with being responsible for your mistakes and try to correct them in the future. (I'm pretty sure he is preaching this to all teams that he coaches)

Same for middle infielders in baseball.
