Since we all seem to dislike every list that we find, I say we see what happens if we try to compile a Top 100 Movies of All-Time List. I'll do the work.

Here's the plan: We have a lot of different tastes and a decent amount of posters. That alone should level out inconsistencies. It'll be a mixture of the overly critical and some of your average "I just want to be entertained" movie-goers.

I would say give me your Top 20 films of all-time , but make sure that you have a clear line of thought when making it. Order them 1-20. #1 gets 20 points, #2 gets 19 points, etc. So obviously, movies with the most points go to the top of the overall list.

I will break ties by looking at how many people listed the movie. So if Movie A (by 2 people) & B (by 4 people) get 27 points, B goes first.
I will then rank 1-100, you get the picture.

Really, I just want to do it to see how we fair. Will we leave out obvious films? Will weird films be ranked near the top? Or will we level out with general trends (Godfather, Casablanca, Gone With the Wind, etc.)?

Thoughts?

I'll go first:

quote:

1. Throne of Blood
2. Seven Samurai
3. City Lights
4. Rear Window
5. Metropolis
6. Casablanca
7. Wizard of Oz
8. Gone with the Wind
9. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
10. Vertigo
11. 2001: A Space Odyssey
12. The Maltese Falcon
13. The Night of the Living Dead
14. The Searchers
15. Duck Soup
16. Double Indemnity
17. Die Hard
18. The Wild Bunch
19. The Graduate
20. Blade Runner

Don't know when the cutoff point will be, maybe when there are no submissions for a few straight days. So some thought can be put into it.

REVISION: 1) List sequels together.
2) Using a formula based off of IMDB's, therefore it uses points and rankings to determine position.

Go with twenty. Seriously. Top 15 is way too limiting. Let me think of a list and I'll get back to you, but I already now its gonna be at least 20.

I think we should just list 100. In no order. It will never be right.

Everyone should post their suggestion. I personally like The Prestige.

Seriously, just went back to the thread and saw your post, hadn't seen it before I swear. Great minds think alike

Hell, I could go to 200 no problem. But scoring multiple submissions of 40 would be tough. Unless someone wants to split the load?

This is hard:

1. Vertigo
2. Godfather Pt I and Pt II
3. Casablanca
4. Rashomon
5. Fight Club
6. Fargo
7. The Seventh Seal
8. GoodFellas
9. Citizen Kane
10. Reservoir Dogs
11. M
12. Chinatown
13. Bridge On the River Kwai
14. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (the Man With No Name Trilogy - Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More)
15. Memento
16. The Third Man
17. Jaws
18. Blue Velvet
19. Trois Coleurs: Rouge, Bleu, et Blanc
20. Evil Dead trilogy

I made an effort not to repeat directors. Making it a trilogy is enough to bump the Evil Dead onto the list.

Before It gets too late, I'm thinking maybe we should group trilogies together? That may change a couple of things and open up spots....?

No need to do that. If you think Hitchcock or Kurosawa have multiple movies up there go ahead.

FWIW, I listed what I think are the "best" movies of all-time, not necessarily my top 20 favorite, that list would be a little different.

that's not a bad idea. I could put the Trois Coleurs together or even the first two Godfathers (which is good enough for Sight & Sound so it should be good enough for us).

And maybe, just MAYBE it could bump the Evil Dead trilogy in there.

Well, my favorites would include about 6 Coen Brothers movies. And probably Bubba Ho-Tep, which is just awesome.

And I do think its important to spread out the directors when working with such a small list. I'd rather not have the oversights. It's a choice I made conciously or else we'd be pretty close to well, nothing but Hitchcock, Kurosawa, Scorcese, and the Coens.

Ah, nice. I would have a couple Coen movies in mine as well. And love Bubba Ho-Tep.

Good point. I think my Top 10 favorite has 5 movies by either Kurosawa or Hitchcock.

Great idea, Freauxzen. I agree, it is hard coming up with a list of twenty. Don't hold me to this list; the only thing I'm sure of are the first two.

Counting trilogies as one entry:

1. It's A Wonderful Life
2. Hoosiers
3. The Godfather I and II
4. Vertigo
5. North by Northwest
6. Raiders of the Lost Ark (only)
7. The Sting
8. Monty Python and the Holy Grail
9. Casablanca
10. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
11. Airplane
12. Star Wars (OT only)
13. Back to the Future (only)
14. Die Hard
15. Apocalypse Now
16. The Naked Gun
17. Evil Dead trilogy
18. Terminator 2
19. Memento
20. No Country for Old Men

You can put it at 20 since I just combined your Godfathers into the number 2 spot since I made the change, but I am doing as we go along at least for the night, so it would be tough to make any changes since I am merely using a three column spreadsheet and adding it up as we go along.

Edit: Winner of the run-on sentence award!

Is that what you want?
