I've filed several patents that my company took care of with a large legal staff with lots of experience. It was always a ton of paperwork for all involved (including me) and there are some rules that make little sense to me. There is no way I could have done them on my own.

Before you spend a lot of time on it, you first need a patent search performed by people who really know what to look for and how.

If a patent ever is granted, know that if it is any good some one in China will just copy it cause they don't give a crap about patents.
