I really like the commercial heifer division of the shows. It allows for normal producers who have good herds to show what they grow rather than go buy a show line purebred.

We had a Brahma get loose last year and take out the trophy table and a couple years before that one of those SOBs jumped out the arena and made it into an occupied bathroom

I showed Pigs and Cattle. Used to love it. It was for FFA. I used to get out of school for several days during the shows to go and take care of all the other kids animals until the show days. I won State Showmanship Champion one year. I can remember me and another kid showing two Boars. Mine was a Hampshire and his was a Blue Butt. Was the first time for me to show Boars and the first I had ever seen it done and it didn't go well. As soon as they hit the ring they went to fighting. Took several grown men to get them apart with the boards. I thought it was hilarious. I also was showing a cow and calf team at the same time. I was playing with the calf too much while we waited for the show to start and when we got into the ring with everyone he jumped up on my back like he was mounting me. The judge had to come pull him off.

That brahman show used to be quite the spectacle. One year at our parish show one got lose and came running down the isle. Screw those bastards, I stepped to the side and let it continue on, out the gate it went. This was at 6pm, when we left the barn at 11pm it was still lose. It eventually made it's way through the Walmart parking lot and was eventually caught and tied to a sewage pipe in a drainage canal.

I showed Beefmaster bulls and heifers and always had a hard time beating limousines!

Kids showed pigs and goats and did well.

Moreso with pigs than other animals, shelter is critical. Make sure they can get out of the cold cause calories burned for heat are not going to conversion of growth.

Not just heat lamps, no north winds.

Mains and shorthorns show AOB also now. Or at least they did when I was showing.

I had a super fine main/shorthorn cross one year. Definitely should have won reserve at state. Judge was on drugs.

AOB was always a crap shoot. I doubt most of the judges even knew what breeds they were looking at. What did you lose to?

It was so much fun as a kid to go to all the shows. I was in the Ascension parish 4H, so our local show was over by Sorrento. Then we had to go to Lafayette and then to LSU for state. But it was always so fricking cold in February!

We had a mini Zebu in AOB last year. It had to be penned in a sheep pen because of fear it would be crushed.

It was a commercial heifer.

Don't remember what I lost state to. It was a guy with some kinda black cow. He was in my district. I got grand at district and he didn't win anything. When he got called for reserve at LSU he stuck his tongue out at me on the way out

I like that class too. At the end of the day, THAT is what it's all about- the commercial cow/calf op.

Raised and showed Lambs from 4th grade until I graduated. Started pigs In 8th grade as well as broilers. I enjoyed it and like some one said earlier, there was some prime tail at the shows and I'm not talking about the angus cows.

I have a cousin in law that involved in the cattle showing, from what he tells me that the sheep are no longer a thing. That and the state show is at the Dixon car in BR.

State moved to lamar Dixon while I was showing.

It was soooooooo much nicer. LSU sucked. The wash racks were terrible, concessions were terrible, and worst of all you couldn't use shavings so the whole barn was a terrible dust ball.

Lamar dixion is set up so perfect for livestock shows.

This has been a long time coming. Raising show lambs hasn't been profitable for probably 25+ years now.
