So if you go without activity on it for a year, they shut it down.

True. Just use it once every few months. If it's a gas card, that's easy. If it's like a Kohl's card, go in there once a month during one of their crazy sales and buy a kitchen item or something.

Yeah Best Buy also declined me along with my bank. Regarding my bank declining me, my mom was none too happy about that considering their history with this bank along with mine in the time I had been there. All in all I will only be using this card for gas and groceries to keep it at a manageable amount to pay off per month.

USAA rewards do suck but if you have a lot of points with them and want to use on travel they have(had) a pretty lenient redemption policy.

I had about $400 from having thay card for years. Found a cheap international ticket. I had a Cap One Venture card at the time with some points as well. Anywho, found the same ticket via USAA's website, which allowed me to use my USAA points to discount the tickets without using the USAA card at all. I paid the remainder with the Cap One card and used it's points to reduce further.

If they still allow that sort of thing it's a good way to extract the value you built up when you had no choice.

Fwiw I don't use either of the two cards mentioned any more as better cards are out there.

With my first job out of school I had moving paid for so I needed a CL increase to pay for a certain pricier part. Despite having an account balance of 0$ at the time USAA rejected me because my credit score showed a high CRedit utilization on my USAA card. I tried getting reconsidered and they had the nerve to tell me I needed to improve my financial habits.

I am 22 and in my AMEX credit score from my application I had a credit score of 747 and zero neg remarks. They can DIAF

I was interested he same boat a year ago and got one of the capitol one cards. I was just recently approved for a Chase sapphire preferred, it won't take long at all to build up a decent score.

I remember they would give you a "College" Tshirt for signing up for a credit card on the way to Highland Dining hall from West Laville IIRCC.

Nice subtle brag there brah.

Ya I definitely am

I was on the phone with them for hours about this. What it boiled down to was my CL at the time was so low that my credit utilization ended up being 80% after one of my moving expenses and while I paid off immediiately the posting date was after reporting date (didn't realize this when I applied). They told me that credit utilization doesn't affect your credit score at all. I needed a CL increase to pay by card for the moving truck cross country

I somehow kept my cool when the woman said I have bad financial habits, am irresponsible and she could suggest ways to improve my financial habits. When she told me that my credit utilization and by extension having a small college credit limit doesn't affect my credit score I responded "Are you fricking joking or are you that stupid?"

She hung up. I was pissed

I paid my way through college, I could pay off my loans today if I chose (5 months out) and I save roughly 25-33% of my take home. Being told I was financially irresponsible and then don't know how credit cards work drove past the breaking point

How can you be old enough to have a bank account for 12 years, yet not have any credit?

Probably a savings account with his parents on it.

I had a savings account that my parents set up when I was young and then added a high school checking account to it. But neither of those things require me owing them anything or paying anything on time so it wasn't something reported to the credit agencies. Sucks but I would have thought with them knowing my history and my parents history that they could have worked something out.

Secured credit card.

That's what I did in 2010. Had a low limit at first but after the first year they raised my limit to like $800, then $1500 the next year. Not sure what it is now. I don't use it much.
