I get where people with this sentiment are coming from, but you're honestly throwing away your money on rent. You should at least buy a condo or something if you have the means to do it
Yeh right on, then 8 months after I buy I can get a great job offer out of state and not be able to sell my condo I bought and be completely screwed. I dont think you understand wanting unlimited mobility

I just made a year in my house this month. It's a great time to buy right now, interest rates are low as hell

You sound like an ad for the realtors association.

It's a great time to buy right now... if you are in a situation where it makes sense to buy. If you are in a situation where it doesn't make sense to buy - for nonfinancial reasons - it doesn't matter if interest rates are 0.25 percent.

Sounds like you made a smart financial decision - for you. This idea that everyone has to buy a house because renting is wasting money, though, has got to die. I thought the housing collapse would have killed it, but I guess not.

Most of the people I know "who love the freedom to leave at the drop of the hat" have been in the same town for years.

So? People aren't going to get up and move to a new city every couple of years just for the hell of it, but if the option arises it's nice to have the freedom to do so. Buying a house either eliminates that option or makes it much more difficult. Sometimes the state of mind is much more important than the actual action.

What if the gov't told you "you've lived in the same city for 10 years, so we're gonna go ahead and mandate you stay in that city for the next 10 years". Would you be OK with that? Chances are you'll probably be their in 10 years anyway, so what's the problem?

Yeh my friend bought a condo 6 years or so ago because "renting was throwing away money". Sold the condo this year to get a house at a 15,000 loss

By the time your in your mid 30's you could have 10 years under your belt of equity that otherwise you'd just be starting off.

I don't plan on staying in Louisiana for the long haul.

Their loss... the two houses I have owned have far and away been my best investments.

That's great for you. There are good real estate investments and horrible ones. And the bad investments aren't always due to bad decision making by the investor.

If owning a house was a good investment for everyone we'd all be doing it and the rental market would be kaput.

I'm with you on this one. Unfortunately TD isn't a place for people who can view different POV's. I'm not at a long term stop in my life. Also, to get a piece of property that will appreciate I would have to drop more down that I would like to. I'd love to get a condo but there aren't many in good areas and those tend to be around $200k.

Hell, my home value could drop 75k overnight, that doesn't happen with rent. It's all market to market, deal to deal, like every thing else in life.

This makes me feel bad that we bought a nice starter home in early 2010 (before everyone really knew what the economy was going to do) and is has nearly doubled in value. Ok, maybe that doesn't make me feel bad!!!! -Millennial who should been born much sooner.

It's almost as if debt-saddled, over-educated, under-skilled people with little job experience are having trouble affording expensive, government subsidized commodities in a prolonged stagnant economy. Crazy

Good post. Many of us a little older just happened to hit a sweet spot with home ownership and can't see things from another perspective.

I'm 23. Married in the spring. Bought a house a week later. No student debt. People aren't willing to sacrifice. You don't have to have the newest iphone and go out to eat every night. Don't be afraid to coupon, not buy the $150 shoes, etc. People are so instant now.

Great for you, but if you are getting married at the age of 23, chances are you are wanting to stay in the same location for a long time.

I'm 26, and I could have sacrificed and purchased a house, but my future in all likely hood is located outside of Louisiana.

Glad you're happy. Not having to deal with home ownership currently makes me happy.

I missed the part in my life where I was supposed to knock up my high school girlfriend, have a shotgun wedding, and settle down with whatever full time job I can find.

If there is anything I don't regret, it is not buying a house in my 20s. I am now 59, have owned several houses, but didn't buy the first one until I was 34. When I was in my 20s, I wanted to be highly mobile and able to take advantage of opportunities that arose no matter where they were.

Why? Can you not comprehend what our liberal friends are telling us? Obama has done more for the economy than Reagan. Unemployment is down. Tax revenues up. All is good.

That's how I moved up to the 6 figure spot so quickly. Nothing tying me down and played fireman for the company.
