There aren't exactly legions of prog rock fans (anymore).

How many people do you know are aware of King Crimson?

I just listened to Eldorado by ELO earlier

I dunno if that's really prog, but it probably is

Holy shite, how had I not listened to that album before? Amazing.

I'm going hard on my prog listening right now.

Not exactly a popular genre these days.

Right, but as far as a discussion about top prog rock albums it would be blasphemy to not mention King Crimson.

Are we defining Progressive Rock as music with more polish, non-typical instruments or rhythms, maybe in some cases, a bit more intellectual? I never really knew the exact definition of the genre but if so I would probably nominate The Moody Blues, maybe some Frank Zappa, Emerson, Lake and Palmer perhaps?

I'm not sure if I'm on base but I always thought these bands were a big "different", perhaps more mature.

I just like putting labels on things. Some people hate the label game, and it is pretty silly, but I like it. It helps categorize and aids in discussion.

Prog is anything with more of a...I dunno, artistic intent to the music. It could be folk, or classical, or experimental or jazz or metal or whatever in its leanings, but its sort of focused on composition and complexity, usually with much longer songs and often in full "concept album" form rather your basic 3-5 minute pop song collection sort of album package.

I dunno, call it whatever, but I think "prog" is a good umbrella term for discussion.

I generally don't like pigeonholing music but the borders around the prog genre are not as blurry as most.

FTR, I don't consider Pink Floyd really prog in the ELP/Yes/Genesis/King Crimson sense. But then again, I'm not sure where I'd put them if I had to pigeonhole them. I guess more electronic or psychedelic rock. Prog to me means rock music with classical and/or folk elements infused into it.

As far as Thick As a Brick goes, it's a great album but I wouldn't give it GOAT status.

If you like to do a bit of reading and research, in addition to the prog website these two books are chock full of good info for both beginners and long-time prog heads like myself.
