" My old CJ5 had an 8 speed manual". No that didn't happen from the factory and I don't know of any aftermarket ever made for this application. Another questionable "tranny"

High 4sp + low 4sp = 8sp

If we're looking at it like that, my tacoma had a 10 speed

It's kinda spendy.

Blew a TH350. Twice.

Put in a TH400, which seemed to be unblowable.

It depends on the application. Rock crawling and trails I'd probably go manual, automatic for pretty much everything else. You have more control with a manual and more torque multiplication with an automatic. Can get manual valve bodies for just about any older automatic that's popular and they are easy enough to bolt in. Big issue is cooling and changing the fluid out on a regular basis.

I got a '05 Rubicon with a lift, tires and winch. Used to take it offroad quite a bit. Now, I drive it around New Orleans (potholes don't scare me). It's a six-speed. I wanted the stick. Gotta a chrome skull knob on it.

In retrospect, I wish I had gotten an auto- both for wheeling and for stop and go driving.

These days, the only thing I'd get a stick shift for is a 400+ HP musclecar.

i got a gm350/700r4/dana 300 ready for whatever you need to throw at it/it in.

700r4 has OD which wasn't available in the th300 or th400. it's a beast of a transmission and even beastier because i put high output/input shafts in it. i also added SYE to the dana 300 and a clock ring. could be yours for whatever you're building!

Dlauw, I sold that old CJ5 for parts a couple of years ago. I bought it used and drove it in the snow and up to the mountain camp for 25 years. Hauled many a deer outta the woods tied across the hood. Like a lot of jeeps, though, the frame rusted out so bad that I got scared to drive it. Straight six banger in it, and the transmission WAS an 8 speed. High and low range, 4 forwards each equals 8 to me. Man, that thing was fun to drive, though, especially in the snow. Pulled out many a snow bound car and truck with it through the years.

I have a 6 speed in my 2012 Rubicon JKU. Love it. I can put it in 4L and 1st and get out and walk around it while it creeps. Plus it is fun as hell to drive with the new Pentastar V6.
