There's more to it than that. Many republicans felt that Roberts needed to go, but he managed to win the primary against Wolf. Taylor (Democrat) was probably offered a deal by the Democrat party to drop out of the race so that Orman (an independent who is really a liberal) would have a shot at the race.

You can't do a direct comparison between income tax cuts and sales tax cuts. A 1% decrease in income tax is greater than a 1% decrease in sales tax because not all of your spending generates a sales tax expense.
According to the IRS sales tax deduction calculator, a family of 4 making between 100k and 120k spend about 19,050 that is subject to sales tax. This means that you would need to decrease sales tax 5% for ever 1% of income tax decrease. (I know I over simplified this example and ignored income tax deductions, but you get the idea.)

I'm aware of all that. I wasn't proposing a direct percentage change between the two.

The reason why Senator Roberts is in trouble and why Brownback is not going to win reelection is because the current revenue crisis in the state is being attributed to Brownback's tax cut legislation.
It was poorly-timed, and is giving democrats and statists plenty of ammo.

Seems like the only reason is to give the state government more revenue? Who cares about the state gov getting more revenue?
