I will never apologize for berating a teenager, especially when I can use the "We're just joking, bro. It's okay if you don't like it." excuse. It's clearly not okay. I just think it's hilarious how now we're in a place where people like that may face some sort of pushback.

Obviously, my people are always going to be a bit more passionate because I genuinely love and live and breathe the sport. I have 2 monitors on my computer, and one is always playing a match, rewatching an older match, or listening to coverage. If I need the other monitor, I've got a laptop open or I'm listening to podcasts (mainly Men in Blazers). That shite rubs off on people. My girlfriend takes no enjoyment from watching any other sport on Earth, but she loves watching matches with me. Hell, if we got married and had kids, I have the okay to add player references in the names if I wanted (which I'm still trying to figure out the best one to go with since Jurgen or Zlatan may get my kids picked on).

All of the support, interest, and people like us coming to a board regularly to talk about it shows how far we've come just from this team in 2005. The fact that we even have this board and it's as active as it is on a site like TigerDroppings is astounding. I still remember so well the MSB soccer threads. The push to get this board and support it is possibly my favorite memory from this site (outside of that night that the guy rage quit on the OT by posting porn until they banned him and didn't get banned for hours). As cheesy as it sounds, I feel like we all fight the good fight just by coming to places like this board, being active, arguing, and just being fans because it creates a pretty rad culture for the sport in America. That culture growing is what appeals to people. The soldiers of those earlier teams, even the mid to late 2000 teams after the 2002 run, have done insane things for the sport here.

Alright, I'm done with the emotional bullshite. All of this 9/11 and patriotism have me reminiscing pretty hard right now.

I used to be hesitant to get into debates with the soccer haters, but discussing the issue with others here who have invariably faced the same thing for YEARS has given me plenty of ammo to push back, as you say. Not trying to be an OT-style badass, but I've stopped giving a shite about offending people and will call them out on their immature, anti-soccer bullshite. Also, any time the "if Lebron played soccer we would win every world cup" argument comes up, I destroy it in about 5 seconds. It's funny to see the lights come on mid conversation in someone who never realized that Adrian Peterson playing soccer in the US setup of the past 10 years = Eddie Johnson.

My favorite in all of this is that after you issue a rebuttal to some of these haters or people who want to change the game to satisfy what they want, they get mad and claim that soccer haters are "eurosnobs" or that we "get mad at everyone who tries to get into it". I say that if someone is ignorant enough to be a dick about something they don't know anything about, they deserve what they get. The funniest part about when people try to use the "imagine if... played soccer" argument is me bringing up watching Ochocinco play with with Sporting KC. He's a physical freak, extremely agile, loves the sport, played it a bit growing up, and he looked absolutely pedestrian on the field with professionals.

As for the Gold Cup, it's amazing the talent that we send now as our "B squad" or "C squad" compared to what we sent (almost) 10 years ago. We have so much young talent now it's insane. Hell, the fact that we held on to that win against the Czech Republic, a team that has historically crushed us, shows how talented our younger, inexperienced players are.

My favorite thing about that whole photo shoot has always been how everybody is wearing designer shite, but Kasey is just like "frick it, I'm wearing US Soccer shorts and a Steve Jobs turtle neck."

Same here.

Honorable mentions for McBride's pants and everything about Pablo Mastroeni. Seriously, how did no one stop Pablo in that shite and tell him that the JCPenney's Jaclyn Smith collection may not be a good look for him? He looks like the "first mate" of Prince's crew.

This Grantland article about the photoshoot is amazing. Red, White, and Blue Steel

quote:

Actual caption: “On the fence but not for long, Brian McBride is a forward with an amazing aerial act. He’s in a Prada cotton shirt, $360, and pants, $390. At Barneys New York.”

Corrected caption: “Why, hello there. I was just stretchin’. Just stretchin’ out my body here on this fence. Like my outfit? It cost $750 at Barneys. It’s not so bad for stretchin’ in. It’s OK. Could be better. This chain-link fence is my main stretchin’ spot. I like the way the chain links feel on my hands. Not sure if you noticed this, but, uh, there’s a pretty funny pattern on my pants.”

quote:

Actual caption: “DaMarcus Beasley, a 20 year-old midfielder from Fort Wayne, Ind., wears a Jil Sander ramie shirt, $530. At Jil Sander, San Francisco.”

Corrected caption: “‘Sup?”

Analysis: Say what you will about DaMarcus Beasley, he’s the only member of the “Boys of Soccer” retinue who looks at all comfortable with himself in this photo shoot. He’s just chilling on some grass here, not fending off paralyzing psychosexual panic derived from personal knowledge of the counter-masculine qualities often attributed to soccer players by the American public and a not-rocket-science vision of how certain cues in this photo shoot will be interpreted. He’s just like, “Hey.” You would also rest fairly easy if you knew the Jil Sander shirt they’d given you cost only $530 but your “7” medallion was worth $400 million cold.

I googled it just to get the photos. I had a great time reading it in the process. Keller and DMB are the only two who look remotely like they're not posing for a calendar aimed at the homosexual demo. I guess if people are calling your sport gay, you embrace it. Soccer was progressive way before the Jason Collins and Michael Sams of the world came out. It paved the way!

I almost used that one, but honestly, no one in America outside of the gay community and a few soccer fans gave a shite. I'd have been more shocked if I'd found out he wasn't gay.
