Kansas State game just reminded me of one: When a college coach of a team that's losing late in the game calls a timeout after the opponent gets a first down.

Not necessarily illogical. If you have 2 TOs left it makes sense. First TO - stop the clock and make opponent run a play with the clock stopped. 2nd down - stop the clock an make opponent run a play with clock stopped. On 3rd
down you make the opponent decide whether to run the ball and risk giving it back to the other team, or pass and risk the clock stopping on an incompletion.

EDT: Should have read it more closely. You said stopping the clock after a first down, but before the next 1st down play is run.

Punting on 4th and short when you are already across the 50 if you do not possess an GOAT defense

But if I'm up by 4 on my own 5 at 4th and 2, I'm punting that bitch every time

You'd have had to have started with a first down on your own -3.

Really? Imagine how hard it would be to move the ball if they knew you were going to throw the ball. They would spread the line out and fill it with quick, explosive guys who blitz well, so you've got at least 4 guys who's specialty is pass rush rushing full out on every play. Then the defense you could fill with basically just safeties and DBs, no need for true LBs really, maybe some bigger guys to guard TEs and use for blitzing. Would be impossible to be productive

Lol, all of that huh? Then how about a simple draw 3-4 times a game? That takes care of it.

Mine is hitters that do not bunt 100% of the time when they shift the infield and leave one line wide open. I want to throw the remote at the TV every single time.

The clock runs after they move the chains...

And it stops for about 10 seconds (typically) before then.

Two scenarios:

1) Play ends with a first down at 2:00, coach calls timeout #1. First down play ends at 1:55, timeout #2. Second down play ends at 1:50, timeout #3. Third down play ends at 1:45, the fourth down (punt) is snapped around 1:05.

2) Play ends with a first down at 2:00, coach doesn't use a timeout. The ref signals for the clock to start with 30 seconds left on the play clock, ball is snapped with around 1:30 left, play ends at 1:25, timeout #1. Second down ends at 1:20, timeout #2. Third down ends at 1:15, timeout #3.

It's not a huge deal, but those 10 seconds could make the difference. I could maybe see using a timeout after they get a first down if you have all three left, because they might throw for it on the upcoming third down. But if you have two or one left (K-State had two left) it really doesn't make sense to use it after they get a first down. The only real possible benefit would be if they turn the ball over on first or second down, which is extremely unlikely in that situation because ball security would be stressed in the huddle during that time of the game.

a) punting on most 4th downs
b) basketball coaches pulling players with early foul trouble
c) pitching "Closer" in the 9th inning regardless of whether there are more essential at-bats he could pitch.
d) other

I'll go with C
I think B is perfectly logical; guys in foul trouble play tentative, especially on defense. Best to put someone else in the game most of the time.

Pretty hilarious listening to a bunch of keyboard jockeys discuss football strategy bc they've played a couple dozen games of madden, thinking they're smarter than football experts with decades of coaching experience with multimillion dollar contracts leading billion dollar franchises. But I'm sure y'all are much smarter and really understand the consequences of never punting. Carry on fools...

I don't think you understand the conformist, corporate mentality of professional sports organizations.
