prog is like "jam band"
What does it actually mean?

I've only heard a little Brand X and it was pretty jazzy/progy. Those albums I listed are a lot more pop than that.
Yeah it's kind of "out there" especially for a Brit. I'm listening to your recommendations now.
Eta: loving Me and Sarah Jane

Dodo Lurker has some reggae in the chorus, nice change of pace.

It's up there. I like Foxtrot a lot too.
Ever hear of a band called Happy the Man? That was a good prog band from back then. Ditto for Camel. I really liked UK, sort of a prog super group.
Others...Gong is really good; I like Steve Hillage too. Speaking of Steve, some of Steve Hackett's side projects were good. I like some of the psychedelic Todd Rundgren stuff like Wizard, Todd and Utopia. I'm a big ELP fan, saw them in the Assembly Center. I like a lot of Roxy Music but there's a lot I don't care for also. Pretty big Zappa fan. Not sure if Floyd counts but I'm a massive Floyd fan. Saw them in PMAC too. I like Yes, King Crimson and Traffic. Some of Supertramp's early stuff was pretty progressive. Pretty much any album that Tony Levin has ever played on. That's the lot I think.
Side note: prog was really big when I was at LSU. The radio station was called WPRG for a time.
By the way, I'm going to see Steve Hackett in Seattle in December. He's doing his Genesis: Revisited show. So they'll be doing Moonlit Knight, Supper's Ready, Musical Box, Firth of Fifth, Watcher of the Skies, etc. I'm pretty fired up for that one.
ETA: Loved Brand X! I thought of them more as fusion than prog but those are just labels. Whatever they were, Brand X was one of the most talented bands I ever heard.

Nice post
Gong is super underrated. Also am a fun of early Rundgren (and even his later pop years). Zappa is definitely an all-timer. I just got a few of his remastered albums and the sound quality is amazing (Live at the Roxy especially ). I never really got into Supertramp, but enjoy their singles.

I'm jealous, that sounds awesome.

And did you like the '99 remake of 'The Carpet Crawlers'?never heard it, but that's probably my favorite Genesis song, so I'll check it out
The remake has the original Genesis lineup - Gabriel and Hackett

Carpet Crawlers is a prime example of why I like Gabriel-era Genesis more than post-era.
Phil ain't writing and delivering a song like that.

I prefer A Trick of The Tail

No question. I didn't completely give up on them until after Hackett left. The first couple of post-Gabriel albums were not up to the same level as before but they had some redeeming qualities.
Here's another one I just thought of. Phil Manzanera from Roxy had a side project for a while called 801. Members included Brian Eno, Bill MacCormick (from Quiet Sun), Francis Monkman (from Curved Air). The name comes from a lyric off of Eno's Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy.

For me, Genesis started to die with Wind and were done with And Then There Were Three (although a couple of cuts on Duke are guilty pleasures).
Foxtrot and Selling England are both mighty records. Not sure why some people hate on Broadway so much - I'll admit it didn't grab me the first time I heard it but I grew to really love it. It's by far the weirdest thing they ever did; the pseudo-accessibility of the music juxtaposes the lyrical contect in a most effective way.
Trick of the Tail is quite good.
My favorite cut would be Watcher of the Skies, all day long.
ETA: solo stuff - Hackett's first (Acolyte) is superb. Please Don't Touch isn't bad, but side 2 loses steam pretty fast. Went downhill fast after that, with the exception of Defector

Under 5 mins! wow. lol
Time Table, from Foxtrot
Carpet Crawlers, Chamber of 32 Doors, Counting Out Time from Broadway.
Entangled or the title track from Trick of a Tail.
These should be good starters.

Longer than 5 minutes but I'd recommend Firth of Fifth, maybe 7-8 minutes. Most of their really good songs were pretty long.
