I heard the job market was terrible, very low pay and work conditions and super long hours.
You just found out the movie industry job market is tough to get into?
Damn dude.

I would rather be a PA and go into the grip department, locations, set lighting, props, etc.
You need like 600 days on set to be a 2nd 2nd, and that's IF someone likes you enough. That's a long time to be making $120/day.

My dad, who works in the oilfield, says never, ever do that. He's seen too many kids with that plan never go back to school because it's hard to give up that baller money and go back to being a poor student
N-speed, I know no one wants to graduate with major debt, but if your parents have been paying, then couldn't you take out student loans for just one year? I mean it's not impossible to go to college without your parents' assistance. I don't speak from personal experience. But I know people who worked two jobs and paid for school so they wouldn't have loans
Seriously, film major? That's a no brainer no. Eco whatever? I don't know what that is. HR? Meh. At my office when I was still in Shreveport the secretary had an HR degree. I made more money than her and had a better job with only one year of college. Stick it out and get a good degree where you can find a job that pays well and is in demand

I mentioned assistant director because it's one of the only departments with a linear career path. It's going to be a lot harder for him to just burst into one of the other departments without serious connections and maybe a major film school degree from NYU, USC, or the like.

Most ADs I know went to a good film school, but everything I saw/see is purely anecdotal and I have very limited experience

Same as my experience.
OP's best hope is that he has the personality to make someone want to take him into their department.
That, or have reliable weed contacts to keep crew constantly supplied.

Wasn't trying for a rating. Its serious advice. If he were my kid, that's what he would be doing. At least has a shot at an office job.
LSU specific: LINK
Its basically a degree with three minors instead of one major. Engineering and Film are obviously two. I'd add Human Resources and get out of school. He can get an office job and go back for a master's later.
wasn't rating you ... rating the troll of the op ... anyone with half a brain shouldn't look at a film major as an automatic ticket to a job ... and i do mean anyone with half a brain ...

Nope, no kidding around. I've seen it first hand.
Weed connections >>>>>> film degree.

Do nursing. You might have to figure something out financially, but the job opportunities are endless and men do especially well in the profession.

Decent majors are hard. You are SOL.
You can get some random degree and try to get on at Enterprise.

Your best bet is as another poster stated is to go talk to a counselor and have them look at your degree. Many upper level classes can be put toward another degree as elective. As long as you take all your basic courses (Freshman and Soph year) you can essentially get any degree in 2 years even if you erased all the upper level elective hours you could use. You should be able to get a degree starting from scratch in a year (including summer school) using your basics already+applied electives. This would entail 18-21 hours/semester which I'm not sure that your capable of if your OP is true and you actually attempted school while you were there.

Im really worried about the PA thing. Im sure I wouldnt even get the chance to be a set Pa for 620 days. Its freelance and you cant get fired/not called for any reason.

The answer is: finish you film degree and become a college graduate.
Get an entry level job doing anything for little pay.
Do job search after 5 months and brag about how you're a future project manager currently working in the film industry but looking for better benefits. THAT is when you decide on a career.
This is the best option.

I had a 2.9 and make damned good money in less than 5 years with an engineering degree. Get an engineering degree until the department kicks you out. You'll still make more than anything but a doctor or successful lawyer.
