I have a Mercury 150 XR6, 2005 model, and had the same exact problem. My issue was the fuel lines. The ethanol in the gas had corrupted the fuel lines and they began to deteriorate from the inside out. I too only ran non ethanol gas with Stabil. Problem was the previous owner didn't.

Quick way to find out. Take off your fuel filter and put on a new one. Take a knife and cut the old fuel filter in half. Mine had a handful of yellow powder in it. Luckily, I caught the problem before it made it to the carbs. New fuel lines and new fuel filter fixed the problem. Hope yours turns out to be as easy as a fix as mine did.

Would yours run smooth at high rpms with a clogged fuel filter?

I really have no brand loyalty with anything, I've owned yamaha and mercury, ford and chevys, the only company I will never own again is seadoo. Have had 2 jetskis and a sportster boat that were POS from day one.

I don't think there are many non-shitty outboards out there. They all go to hell after 10 years with the exception of a few rare examples.

I'm just confused, if there was a restriction in the fuel lines due to deterioration, wouldn't it get worse at higher rpms?

I think I'm just going to go ahead and do new fuel lines/bulb, filter, and rebuild the pump. I won't be able to get to it til next week, but I'll report back the results.

Also, is there any harm to just taking the guts out of the antisiphon valve? I just want to rule that out as a possibility, and I'm not too worried about anyone stealing gas, my boat stay locked up.

I disagree. We have 3 late 90s outboards (2 yammys and a tohatsu) and they still run like tops. If you take care of them, they'll last.

Just some more info on this situation. We went wakeboarding on august 15th and I looked at some videos from then and the motor appears to be running fine. The next day we had the boat at capacity with people and weight and ran about 30 min to hang out with friends through pretty rough water. On the way back is when I really started to notice the problem. I thought it was a prop issue, but I've tried a new one and no change.

Just not sure with that heavy of a load on it what could have messed up?
