Last time I checked, we don't play any WC qualifying matches between now and next September.

The Gold Cup is pretty important.

He'll still be playing for Everton and keep his match fitness. Landon's hiatus was from professional football altogether.

So are you saying Landon was isn't shape when he returned to the USMNT?

To be fair, Donovan did discuss his leaving with JK as well as the Galaxy. He didn't just wake up one day and sneak off to Cambodia without telling anybody.

Fair. But you can't believe the conversations were the same.

Landon's was closer to I don't know if I have the passion for this game anymore. I'm peacing out for a while. Not sure when I'll be back if I will be back.

Tim Howard was tired from lots of soccer. It's after the World Cup, he is still playing for Everton, and he gave Klinsmann a return date.

The 2015 Gold Cup isn't nearly as important as WC qualifiers. We won the last Gold Cup so worst case scenario is we have a playoff for the Confed Cup bid, which Tim will be back for.

I agree, these are not the same situations. Donovan was burnt out from soccer and didn't enjoy it anymore. Howard just wants more free time to spend with his family.

However, the endgame is ultimately the same in that the USMNT will be missing a key player for an important competition. There are some people in this thread who crucified LD for bailing on the USMNT during the third round of WCQ's (not saying it was you). Well, it looks like Howard is bailing on the USMNT during the Gold Cup.

For the record, I have no problem with what Donovan did and what Howard is doing. They know themselves better than anybody and they needed/need a break.

See, that's like your opinion, man.

In terms of competition, the Gold Cup will have better competition for the USMNT than the third round of WCQ's.

Also, slightly different because we all know that there is an adequate replacement for Howard. That just wasn't the case with Donovan. We didn't have a player who could do what he did.

Why is that Donovan's fault? Had he not done enough for US Soccer at the point when he took the hiatus?

I'm not saying it's fair. It's just the way it is.

If you are playing a 5 on 5 basketball game, and you need a sub because you are exhausted, you call for one. If there is no sub, you stay in the game.

Here's the thing though, Klinsmann clearly thought that there were people who could play better than Donovan. Hence not calling him up for Brazil.

No way. Klinsmann was pissed about him abandoning him the way he did. If Landon stayed and worked hard. Or had given a solid return date, he goes to Brazil. Obviously, I can never prove this, but it's what I believe.

If he feels like he needs to take time off, so be it. He'll still be playing top flight football at Everton. It's not like he's leaving the game. He's just taking a break while the stakes aren't as high.

I'm not even going into the LD debate on this one because the situations aren't very similar.

Then why did he call him up for the Gold Cup and every World Cup qualifier after that?

Not to mention the fact that Donovan was our best player in those games.

taking a break after the world cup when you have consulted with the coach that you have a great relationship with is way different than bailing in the middle of world cup qualifying on a coach you already have a strained relationship with.

I never said the scenarios were the same.

At the end of it all, though, you are missing a key piece on that player's own accord.

tim wasnt going to get called into the gold cup anyway. we already won the last one. worst case scnario we get in a playoff to go to the confed cup.

we are going to bring a young squad to that tournament.

my post was not directly to you in particular. just to all the people going to say the situations are the same.

and what are you saying about key piece accord? huh?

I'm not sure what you don't understand about that sentence.

Both Donovan and Howard made their own decisions based on what they feel is right, not what may necessarily be right for the team.

What? We are going to take as close to our best squad as possible.
