I used to get so mad when my friends with zero industry experience (and sometimes zero work experience at all) were turning down jobs with companies I couldn't even submit an application to despite having a few years of relevant experience and many years of general work experience. That's just how it works.
You want to get Exxon and Dow in a salary bidding war to hire you straight out of school? You had better have a really high GPA, head up some organizations, AND have industry internships.
If you have a mediocre to low GPA, you're going to have to bust your arse to be in that position 10 years from now. The guy who did it while in school is already there.

As you can see in this thread most employers won't even ask so chances are the experienced guy will get the job.

Bumped to point out that what one really wants is to have Exxon and Shell or Chevron or Conoco bidding on you. Big Oil $>>>>Big Chemicals $. Always.
And three years out of school is about when it starts, particularly right now with engineers in demand due to rapid expansions, new plants and a huge wave of retirements.
