re: OT Parents: Kids with bad grades

He will never make it in college.

Yeah in 5th grade he was doing about three hours of homework a night and would be crying about it

So I scheduled a conference with his teachers, intent on telling them they were giving too much homework. Every one of them proceeded to tell me that he was reading a book in class and not doing his work. So he was having it for homework. He quit taking the book to school and amount of homework went way down. So talk to the teachers

Scores 60th percentile on private school standardized tests. Grades are 2.2-2.8 with a D somewhere along the way.

Oh and work ethic is the big concern.

My take is by 8th grade my parents were sink or swim so frick you kid. They did the opposite with my sis and she ended up being a 2.5 college kid.

Yeah we had him tested last year- most scored him in need and one said he was the perfect student. We may try again.

You have to get involved as a parent.

Change the password wifi until kid is done with what he needs.

Wife and I saw this and we won't forget this little trick either....

Start the year off with no privileges. No TV cell phone internet etc. you want to play xbox? show me homework and it better be right.
Let them earn crap like a cell phone with grades. 4.0 average gets the whole thing free. Lower graders will require the kid to pay a copayment through sweat equity. The kid will learn the value of a $ grades at the same time.

Don't cave and make sure you and your spouse are on the same page with this.

My son was not doing well in school around the 4th grade. His mother told him that he had a choice, have fun at home after school or have fun in school. Since he was apparently having too much fun at school and not getting work done at home, all of his gameboys, video games, etc were taken from him for a complete marking period. He would get them back if he made nothing lower than a B+. He didn't the first marking period thereafter and so he could not use his electronics. The following marking period he did fine and got nothing less that a B+ and got his priorities in order. That was how he went through elementary school and high school. After that, he was on his own at Washington & Lee.

It's hard to believe that he is a doctoral candidate in neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University now. I expect he will stay in academia for the rest of his life.

Man my kids went from giving a flip in school to not giving a frick.my youngest had to attend summer school he hated getting up while everyone else got to sleep in over the summer seemed to have cured him of fluffing off in school. My oldest two just got lazy and basically took them almost failing to realize that that will get them nowhere. Extra work to catch up and tutoring plus getting xbox and phones taken away helped. My 3 range between 8th grade to a junior in high school. So good luck
