I don't live on the boat. I come out when a job is up, and go back home right afterwards. I average about 8-10 days offshore a month. The rest is in the office, at home, or days off.

Work/ life balance is great. Like I said, I usually average about 8-10 days a month offshore. But that's because we haven' lost anyone in almost a year because management is really good. They keep us happy.

When I was going through, the engineers on the boat were pulling their hair out. Not enough people and they were always working. I heard stories of 25 days out of the month. Guys who had been there for less than 2 years were considered senior because of everyone leaving. They all work for an operator now. That's a good thing, because they got in the door quickly. But I also think they were all ready to jump ship because of the workload. Things could have easily changed since then.

I in general never wanted to go offshore. I like the oil and gas career, but I'm not an offshore person.

Pioneer in Dallas is always looking for people. With their acreage position you will probably have a pretty steady job for years to come baring a substantial drop in oil prices.

I'm a PE in Dallas and there are plenty of openings for an engineer. I get at least one call a week.

Also, some companies are doing a sign-on bonus equal to one year's salary. A third upfront, a third on your one year anniversary, and a third after year 2. So with a high salary, sign-on bonus, and annual bonus you can make some real cash in two years. Here's a list off the top of my head.

DFW Companies
Denbury
XTO
Range
Tug-Hill
Jetta
Athlon
Vess Oil
Petro-Hunt
Hunt Oil
Covey Park Energy
EXCO
Laredo
Pioneer
Reef
Venari
Kosmos
Chief
Primexx
Mid-Con Energy

This thread is great. I am happy to see people as young as you all probably are making big cash.

A piece of advice from a middle-aged guy; save at least 10% of your salary per year and max out the company's 401(k).

I love my job, but at 52, I am looking to retire very soon.
It comes up quick,boys.

Petreaux, What do you think the best way to get my name out there is? just apply to all of them via their website? Should I get with a recruiting service??

Are there any companies you like over others?

Can I send you an email?

Recruiting Service

Yes, LINK /

Yes, it depends on what you're looking for. Do you want to go the start-up route? Are you looking for equity? Do you want the high paying corporate job with a 9/80 schedule? They're all different.

Can I send you an email?

Sure, petreauxcat@gmail.com

PetreauxCat has made a small fortune off of signing bonuses and contract buyouts. Averages about a company a year with a promotion with each move. For fun he goes back to the same one every other year to leverage the others...

I've talked to a few guys in completion tools PSL and they all seem to like their job. They average around 10 days a month and do pretty well money wise also.

Your Production Enhancement experience and prior stint with an operator should be a big help in catching on again with an operator.

I don't know much about the Chevron DSM program but can say from experience that Chevron is a good people-oriented company in terms of training/development and work-life balance. Starting at a major is always a great place to get good experience, training, and connections. And a lot of people like the international travel and job security that comes with a major and end up staying.

If you want to work for a small operator where you have a lot of control you will either need a good track record of experience or start off in a smaller field or role where the cost of failure is not too high. But catching on with an operator is a good first step, then you can be as proactive as you want in learning about the other disciplines, churning out good results, and pushing where you want your career to go.

My career has been purely conventional plays, from a major to a mid-size to a small operating company. The shale stuff is booming but is not too interesting to me from a technical perspective - purely a personal opinion.
