I don't think I've necessarily thought about escaping to an Island, but have certainly thought about relocating and working out of state just for change of scenary.

I'm not about escaping away to an Island. Life, to me, is about what you leave behind. I want to make as many friends as I can and try to be a good person everyday. I think the hardest thing in life is being remembered after we're gone, and escaping to an Island won't get me there.

Fortunately, I make enough money and have enough friends to travel, and do fun things to break the monotony of the 4day work week. So rather than leave my family and most of my friends behind, I'd rather make memories with them through trips, and other fun experiences.

And when I do go to that tropical Island, I don't want to be waiting tables. I want to be waited on.

I urge you to read 4-hour work week

It is damned good read. It helped me formulate my retirement plan.

Spent a week in Mahahual Mexico last year, and would have loved to have stayed. It's about 30 miles north of the Belize border. We rented an apartment in the little village and went diving everyday. A couple of days cruise ships were in port (Costa Maya) and it got busy, but the other days, we pretty much had the town to ourselves. I'd love to retire there someday.

I complain about life sometimes but at least it's a life of substance. I guess I've come to view his life as fantasy or permanently avoiding reality. It's actually helped me come to peace with my life.

It's cool when you're younger but it'd be odd (to me) to be 40ish and single, no kids, no long term job, etc. Each his own though.

So many 's for this post. What does a "life of substance" even mean? That's such a subjective phrase.

The fact that you called his life a "fantasy" is laughable, because obviously he is doing it, therefore it's not a fantasy. It may be a fantasy for you, but it's his reality.

And nobody said you have to be single and have no kids to live such a life.

Yeah, this is where people post opinions and their subjective views, right? To me, a life of substance means spouse, kids, friends, professional career, community involvement, etc. To others it may mean waking up every morning on the beach with little demands. Each his own.

You say my statement is laughable then basically affirm it. It's fantasy for me, at least at this point.

My overall point was, when dreaming of escaping, it's good to be honest with yourself about what your long term goals are and you may realize you're already living toward that and appreciate it more rather than get lost in escapism.
