It really is astounding how miserable we are as a profession. It's no wonder so many of us are alcoholics or addicts or whatever.

Yeah. That's pretty awesome, though. At least you're not as stressed.

Doing alright doing what I'm doing, but I bet if I had to do another field of law my thoughts would turn negative quickly

Dont really have much extra money after I pay expenses for three kids in school, but I have what I need. I decided a few years ago to live a simpler life.....so i dropped the domestic cases and the booze that goes with them and picked up tigerdroppings and horses

Good for you. Yeah, I noticed last year that I was getting overweight and drinking more than I used to. So, I decided to get addicted to fitness.I don't drink and I'm in the best shape of my life. Still, I'm feeling unfulfilled. I still have hope that there is an area of law that will fill my void, but I'm not too optimistic.

Yeah. Trying to deal with the stress by pouring booze on it wasn't very effective for me either. I had fallen into the thinking that I was trapped litigating for the rest of my life. I mean I'm a lawyer. I have to litigate and keep up with everyone right?

Now I'm happy everyday. I don't need a Porche. I don't need to be a top partner. I just want to get my work done and enjoy my family.

There is immense pressure to win when you try cases, If you dont, its usually the lawyers fault, from the clients perspective......just the way it is

I've been practicing for more than 35 years now. I wouldn't know what else to do. I do enjoy trial work, with all the stress that comes with it. I do have to admit, a lot more lawyers piss me off now a days.

I can understand that, but just do your best to explain the risks to client.

Look, for us little guys, you all are our last line of defense.

The only thing more expensive than having a lawyer is not having one.

I graduated law school but never practiced. I saw how lawyers live and realized my love for the law did not translate into a love for being a lawyer. Fortunately I found a non-legal profession that pays a similar salary and I am very happy.

Sure. Every time a client is an arse/doesn't listen/etc.

The high one gets from getting a positive result for a client is the rope that keeps me tied in.

It seems like you have it together. My only words for you based on your posts are to not look for fulfillment in work. It's good to halfway enjoy what you do. But I let being a lawyer define me for too long. It's a job. That's it.

Yeah, you're right. Thank you. I will definitely heed your advice.

Were you litigating for a particularly large firm? I want to litigate when I get out, but would rather blow my brains out than work for one of the "big guys" like Jones Walker, Phelps Dunbar, etc. and be their slave for 4-5 and maybe/maybe not make partner. I feel like litigation is my niche, but I'm not hell-bent on the porches, being able to tell eveyrone I'm a top partner (actually don't give a shite about either of those), etc. that you alluded to.

Based on my fairly limited knowledge of the profession, you can pretty much be as miserable or happy as you choose to be, but it's about finding a balance, finding your niche and doing what makes you happy/fulfilled. Am I that far off?

Fair enough. Makes sense. Look for a means to end that I don't completely loathe in order to put food on the table.

As men, we have to be careful of this in general, not just lawyers specifically.

I love business and I like my work, but I don't want to be Sam Walton, working every day except Christmas, lying on my death bed looking at people I barely know.

Our careers can consume us, if we let them.

I'm only at 25, but lawyers piss me off less now than before. Just don't lie to me and we will get along.
