Sopranos is the best show ever.
It's my favorite.
...agree that like it or not, the ending can't be called lazy.
I loved Cifaretto and Moltisanti

All three of them were much more tolerable than walt jr, marie, or skylar IMO
I guess my problem is - Skylar was required to further the plot in BB - Tony could have had a fairly generic family (and by and large he did) and it would have served the function - in each case - the shows' otherwise brilliant writers and directors seemed unsure as to what to do with the six characters (3 each for the shows) - ultimately they failed, because I, and most fans, didn't like or care about any of them - least of all AJ - I take it back - there was one scene in Season 1 where Tony and AJ are playing video games - I got a little bit of the feels. And, obviously, who couldn't sympathize with Walt Jr.'s CP?
The women were a little better, overall, but I don't see a whole lot of qualitative edge of Carmela over Skylar (although I'll concede that Meadow was better than Marie... a little).
The potential was there, but, just like the other 2 that are often in this discussion The Wire and The Shield - the show didn't always know what to do with female characters and fumbled often (although both of those shows did a better job with women and kids than either Sopranos or Breaking Bad.)

I don't think they were there to be liked or cared about as much as to serve to highlight Tony's character in different ways. Some of the most extreme views of Tony, from caring father to complete monster, come from his interaction with his wife and kids. Of course, the most extreme range was with the shrink, but there was only so far to go there. IMO Carm and the kids were just intended as pawns for the show more than prime likable roles.

We found a way to like most of the cold-blooded killers on the show... even Uncle Junior.

Prob my fav show of all time.
I wanted more too... Prob moreso I just didn't want it to end.
At least had it continued couple more years they would have had to kill tony off.

My thoughts:
1. Ralphie was the most entertaining character in the series. He never should have been whacked IMO. Would love to have seen him back for Season 5. Mommy's little hua!
2. AJ was terrible. He was clueless and aloof. Meadow was an asset in my opinion. Only character who really stood up to Tony.
3. Still not convinced Tony dies at the end. That would have been an awfully sloppy job for a professional hitman. I think the point was that the story never ends regardless of what happens. Life just goes on.

I am.

I think the point was - getting him in Manhattan took him out of his comfort zone - they took it as a target of opportunity. That hit would have been a lot harder and a lot harder to sell to his guys if it happened in Jersey.

That was my initial take, too. After researching it, I'm convinced Members Only guy whacked him. However, I understand the ambiguous theory and once subscribed to it.

quote:This is correct. In a larger sense, it created a Good vs Evil scenario right inside the family environment. You have to admire AJ for rebelling against what he knew was wrong and at least trying to take the road less traveled. His own adolescence/dependency was holding him hostage. He was frustrated.

Yes Ralphie was awesome lol, I was they would have kept him around. Same with Mikey, I was real pissed when they killed him off season 1.

For gangsters, the ending is almost always the same- jail or death.
So to end on that on I don't want to saying boring, but it's kind of predictable.
They managed to show that but also making it riveting. The final scene scene was shot with such intensity. And all the clues saying he gets shot but leaving you hanging, it was a thing of glory.
Ppl who complain about the end just enjoy seeing a good shot to the head imo

That was my second favorite whack scene of the series, behind Phil
"Go take a midol"
Mikey: It wasn't me, it was Junior! (Talking about Brendan's whacking)
Chris: Right, Junior, Mr. Magoo!
Paulie running into the poison ivy Mikey is begging for his life and Paulie's complaining "I can feel it itching me already!"

Never understood why any mobster would go for a jog on a desolate road where you could easily get whacked. I would think that would always be on your mind. But yeah, that was a good one!

When I saw it live I remember saying WTF? and was really disappointed.
However, as time has passed and I've re-watched the series I've come to appreciate the finale.

I have a lot of friends that were Sopranos fans at the time as well and I can't recall not one of us watching it and going "that was really good". Given the nature of the show, I think we were expecting something more flashy or violent or whatever. I never saw the "fade to black" type of ending. But, like you, as time has passed I have come to appreciate it and enjoy it now. The night that it aired? Yeah, I was pissed.

I liked when he whacked Donnie.
"Hey Donnie, Sorry!"

ittle carmine always was saying something stupid. Funniest guy on the show IMO.
He told tony "you're at the precipice of an enormous crossroad"
And Chrissy telling Ben Kingsley that the producer of his movie did top notch shite like "Law and order SUV"
My god I miss that show.

the sopranos ending is like season 2 of the wire. in real time, you are left disappointed, only after you are able to digest it and think about it can you appreciate it.

But AJ never did rebel against what he knew was wrong. It was established very early in the series - hell I think season 1 - that the kids knew exactly what their father was doing.
AJ was pathetic and obnoxious and worthless purely based on his spoilage. He tried to find topics to rebel against but was painfully misinformed on all of them.
He may have garnered some respect if he said, "frick this. I'm living on my own and making my own money."
He never once suggested that. Even in the end, he was driving a brand new BMW doing some shite, no-work job that Tony got for him.
