If they didn't trade for Julio, they could potentially have this:

2011
26th - Muhammad Wilkerson (taken 29th)
59th - Randall Cobb (taken 64th)
124th - Julius Thomas (taken 129th)

2012
22nd - David DeCastro (taken 24th), Dont'a Hightower (taken 25th), Whitney Mercilus (taken 26th), Nick Perry (taken 28th), or Doug Martin (taken 31st)
118th - not even sure.

Now the question is, do you think Atlanta's personnel would have even selected them.

It could be both. 1 additional first round pick, a second and two fourths. That could have added a few starters

You said that it didn't hurt your depth.

It's both. You're acting as if they're mutually exclusive.

You have the draft picks to fill out the roster, you have the liberty to go for more quality in FA.

You contradicted yourself and now you're too proud to admit it. It's not a big deal. Everyone makes mistakes.

I doubt we will be as bad as last year, but that game was troublesome. Baker was really one injury we couldn't afford. While Matthews could already be a better LT than Baker, I think Tackle is where our biggest drop off from starters to 2nd string is.

I think poor player evaluation finally caught up with this team. Besides TD's first draft, and probably the last 2 drafts, they have drafted poorly. Top that with poor free agent pickups, and this team is showing that we don't have a lot of talent outside certain players.

But I'm also being very pessimistic right now.

Is it really that hard to understand that there are more ways to solve a problem than 1?

Yes, the Julio trade effected our depth. At tat point, you find another solution to fixing depth, which is free agency. Our FOH unwilling to use our available cap in free agency hurt us.
You seem to think that free agency is only to get huge playmakers, which in the Saints case is true.

However, teams also use free agency to get depth. The falcons always have the opportunity to do so to offset that Julio trade, but don't. Really not sure what is so hard to understand.

Oh, I understand that quite well, and that actually goes right with my point.

No, they really don't, because the FA market is limited, and there aren't a ton of quality players that hit the market because their teams usually don't let them get to FA. Out of that pool, there are only so many players that actually fit with your schemes. A lot of teams panic and just sign players to sign players and act like their holes are filled.

The draft is crucial to team building.

So now you know why gms sign players? No real reason besides panicking?

From when Julio was drafted till now, there has been more than enough chances to sign quality depth. It is asinine to think that the falcons couldn't make up the depth issue from the trades since then.

ETA: we gave our 1st, 2nd, 4th, and the next year's 1st and 4th. Yall traded that years 2nd and the next year's 1st, but then lost 2 more 2nd round picks because of the bounty. So according to your theory, the Saints depth should be as bad a s the Falcons.

Obviously they gave up a shite load to get Julio, but this is the most ridiculous hindsight there is when it comes to sports

There are teams that splurge in FA year in and year out and get nothing to show for it.

Exactly, there is almost a 0% chance that atlanta would have selected those same players.

Coincidentally, most of the players that were available at atlanta's picks are average players that may or may not even improve atlanta's depth.

2011 - Baldwin, Smith, Ingram, or Carimi (1st)
Greg Little, Hariss, Mouton, Thomas, or Gilbert (2nd)
Jones, Powell, Carmichael, or Allen (4th)

Hindsight is always a bitch. When Julio is healthy, he shows how much better he is. Problem is, we couldn't see it last year.

But from the way we drafted around that time, who is to say the Falcons would have used those extra picks on decent players.

We didn't lose as many picks?

We also are better drafting in the lower rounds and finding UDFA that can make the team and contribute. We also tend to make some better FA signings.

Only lost 1 less pick. Which we at least got value out of the picks we gave up, which Yalls can't say about the two 2nd rd picks taken from y'all, which arguably should mean y'all lost more value.

But you just sorta summed up what I have been saying is the real problem. Poor player evaluation.

Saints could have gotten Kiko Alonso in 2013.

Yeah, all those free agents Denver picked up last year was a real waste.

That's a pretty cherry you've got there.

History shows that FA splurges tend to not work out.

But Thomas Dimitroff is NFL executive of the year...no way it's his fault. I mean his accomplishments include being smarter than the Dolphins GM for not passing on Ryan and being part of the Patriots organization at one time.
