He could have run to the pitchers mound then. To home plate if it were not a clear attempt to avoid a tag
Rounding the bases then falling confirms that....
He was safe...plenty folks move way more than that to not get tagged(referring to lean/step as he crossed catcher)

and besides how can the catcher tag him without the ball?
