one of the best metrics of sport popularity is reddit subreddit subscribers...in terms of #s it goes...

NFL
NBA
NHL

MLB

young ppl who use the internet dont give a shite about baseball (that trend will continue)

There will probably be at least 3 great playoff series played in that region next year.

It's going to be bananas

I cant speak for casual fan, but blatant dirtiness of youth basketball, especially AAU, really turns me off.

I was summer league games this summer and thought to myself how great it would have been to have all those guys still playing on the collegiate level. It sucks for the ncaa, but it's great for the nba.

And advertisers don't like baseball bc of the demographics- too many old, white guys. They love the young, diverse crowds that basketball attracts.

Ok, advertisers don't like the people with the money.

I agree having them would be great, but I can't stand the pace and officiating of the college game. It hurts to watch.

The Heat aren't a "Southern" team. You know that. And the grizzlies don't have any history with their city. They moved from Canada not too long ago.

Exactly Lloyd. You need a resurrection of a majority white lineup like the Celtics to garner interest ot the Southern white man.

The Spurs this year presented a brand of team basketball unlike I've seen in my lifetime and still mostly all I see is how the NBA basketball is garbage.

People see what they want to see.

Two unrelated points: The next tv deal for the NBA will be massive as another poster said. I think it will include a trigger to get the D-League to 30 teams, and accelerate the prospect of developing young players on the cusp of making it to the bigs. The D-League has been around for nearly 15 years, and is finally finding the right markets for the product to work. Putting the teams in big league cities like Anaheim, Kansas City, etc. won't work. Places like Portland (ME), Santa Cruz, and Rio Grande Valley are perfect, yet still close enough to their major league counterpart to be viable.

As for MLB... MLB is like driving an American-made car. It functions alright, but then you see another car on the road (or sport on another channel), and realize you are driving a Chevy.

Been here nearly 15 seasons. Local ratings are near the top of the league.

Don't you mention that reddits thing around these parts. Never mind the fact the two sites are nearly identical except one is catered towards old republican racists while the other has a wide demographic that actually shows nudity.

Td.com is the MLB of message boards. Outdated and behind the times.

The point? Asking td.com why basketball isn't popular during the summer is moronic. It's answer will be archaic groupthink. You'll get a couple of old turds downvoting every pro NBA post on the blind hope that maybe their down votes outnumbering up votes makes it truth.

The NBA has the ability to attract national audiences because of their superstars Problem is for the majority of teams is local support, no one shows up to their games and they don't watch them on TV either hence you actually have teams losing money

MLB>NBA for the foreseeable future

Nothing.

NBA is an urban sport (not black...big city). There are very few of those in the south and the large majority of people in the south are wary and/or dismissive of city folk and their ways.

The problem is that they're a big market league.

They're forever handicapped to get anywhere near the nfl bc with individual player caps, a max player will choose a big market over small markets unless he's in a great situation

And southern cities are generally lower income than other areas in the us. Nba players don't care for that

When you give people in the south a winning team to root for, they'll do it. Ie the grizzlies. Problem it's so much harder to do it in a small market

ESPN aired a Team USA exhibition game during prime time on a Saturday night during the stretch run of the MLB season. That's all you really need to know about the sign of the times.
