Thats what the officer is claiming, but its kind of hard to take an officers gun when he is seated in a vehicle.
Yeah that would be a pretty ballsy thing to try to do.

Though I know a guy who took a leak through an open LSU PD police car window and totally got away with it. (I know it because I saw it from a balcony).

You can have an opinion.

Police using excessive force often leads to unnecessary deaths and destruction of property.

I realize it cannot be an easy job being the Police Chief of New Orleans, but agree with this. Could he still be there simply because no one else would take the Zookeeper position?

I think the checkerboard nature of NO neighborhoods lessens the racial tension that is present in so many other cities. Not saying it doesn't exist, but not nearly as bad.

Pretty much. Plus that type of response just doesn't seem to be in the culture like other cities. There may be protests, but the don't typically turn violent.

I remember thinking about this while in L.A. at the beginning of the Rodney King riots. Neighborhoods aren't nearly as integrated and there's not much day to day interaction among white people and lower income black people. We flew to N.O. for JazzFest the next day and everything was calm even though there had been incidents in Atlanta and other cities.

ETA: I know Ronnie Serpas, and I'm sure he's pissed that someone fricked this up. He's far too much of a politician to have intentionally tried to cover it up by not reporting it.

Since you know him, can you pass along my sentiments? Tell him he is a piece of shite and needs to resign. Thanks

that is so typical....give your opinion when it suits your agenda.....claim ignorance on the matter when it doesn't.

FWIW, I didn't say we were pals.

i don't know anything about serpas specifically, but isn't NOPD severely understaffed b/c nobody will take the job?

if that's true, i don't see anybody having good results in that shite show of a city (with respect to violent crime)

They need to revamp that entire department, from the top to the bottom. Raise pay, raise standards, and get rid of the thugs and dead weight.

Easier said than done. It is amazing that State Police can go down there and seem to do more work in a month than they do all year. Unfortunately, I do not think NOPD will ever be a good agency.

Have been told from officers of varying departments that the average wait time for an NOPD officer to work a wreck is over two hours on the interstate.

If it is on a side street somewhere, good luck, because might be waiting even longer.

A lot of the patrol level officers are corrupt as hell. They work extra duty security while on actual duty. Instead of patrolling their area, they are across town working security for double the pay.

They are, but there can be ways to make up for the decreased manpower. As VOR said, he's a politician. He's not looking to rock the boat or bring in any new or innovative ideas. The status quo isn't working.

Bunny Colvin for Police Chief.

They need about 300 more officers. A couple of things should help over the next couple of years, though. They're doing away with the residency rule. Last time they did that, recruiting significantly increased. They're also shifting money around to increase pay. One problem they used to have is that they used a lot of money on starting salaries, but that caused problem with veteran officers who weren't getting the raises they wanted.

As far as violent crime in tourist areas or the "good" parts of town, that just takes more police presence on consistentand predictable basis. As far as the bulk of these crimes, they occur in shite show neighborhoods for the most part. Those are hard to stop.

Bingo.

Let the hood do hood things. It is a shame though that Troopers have to be the ones keeping the tourist area safe. NOPD can't even protect the most "important" part of the city.

One NOPD officer, who was the father of the TE recruit who committed to Miami year before last, was arrested by the FBI for that exact thing less than a year ago. He was 'working a detail' at an Eastbank elderly complex(Guste), while working a detail as traffic cop at Westbank school, and being on actual duty.

ETA- I looked it up his name was Dobard, and he was sentenced to 18 months and ordered to pay the city $19K, it partner was also received the same sentence.

Dear god. You take something that everyone agrees is going overboard and make it political.

Exactly what I was thinking.

I was like "oh hey, here's something Tuba and I can agree on for once. Common ground is progress."

This is why we can't have nice things.

Even in areas of agreement you want to turn it into a pissing match.
