We camp near the base of the Sawtooth Mountains, and the whole area is surrounded by National Forest. Coming out of Louisiana, the amount of access into the National Forests out there blows my mind. "Here's some badass mountain country. Here's a few hundred miles of dirt road, do whatever the hell you want, just don't burn it down."

Amazing isn't it? Coming from Texas (where 95% of the land is privately owned) I drove from Southeast to South Central Utah and was surrounded by BLM land. I was like "So this is what complete freedom feels like!" lol.

Anyways, I've been planning on going to the Sawtooths next year. These pics make me want to go now. lol.

It's amazing. Almost all land in S.E. Alaska is public land, I can go wherever I want and damn near do what I want.

About 66% of Idaho is public land, it's one of the most underrated States IMO

It almost feels wrong. I feel a little bit of anxiety in the back of my head when I just take a random left onto a random road into a canyon somewhere. Surely, somebody has to own this beautiful piece of property?

It sorta reminds me of that old Jeff Foxworthy bit..."alright, we're out here hunting on...somebody's property."

Four hours from Jackson Hole. 2 Hours from Idaho Falls. 4 Hours from Salt Lake. 3 Hours from Boise. We drive over from Jackson Hole every year after squeezing in some fishing.

Geeze, probably not til late Winter/Early Spring. It probably wasn't final until May or so this year. You can count on Randy Rogers, Micky and the Motorcars, and Reckless Kelly every year. Hayes Carll makes it most years. The bands all love coming up for it, but it can be hard to make Middle of Nowhere, Idaho work with a tour schedule.

Here is a great article about the Sawtooth Mountains from the New York Times. If you have the itch to visit, give it a read.

Your Own Private Idaho

A few favorite quotes:

quote:

The first words out of my brother-in-law’s mouth: “I feel like I’m in a Bob Ross painting.”

quote:

Established by Congress in 1972 and managed by the federal Forest Service, the 756,000-acre Sawtooth National Recreation Area, which includes the 217,000-acre Sawtooth Wilderness, is arguably more rugged and wild than any national park — in large part because it’s not one.

quote:

With 700 miles of trails and only a fraction of the annual visitors actually hiking them (exact statistics are not compiled), even the easiest, most accessible trails in the recreation area still feel like the backcountry compared with Yosemite’s valley floor. It came close, but the Sawtooths dodged the national park designation decades ago. And that’s a lucky thing, say locals, who proudly tout its unofficial slogan: “The Tetons, without the handrails.

Havent been to Steamboat but it was phenomenal. Turnpike, Hayes Carl, The Greencards, M&M, RR band, and Reckless killed it. We drove up the Custer Motorway and around back by the Salmon river and the scenery was truly breathtaking

Ah yes, the Tiger Fans from Minden. Appreciate your help with that dude. He tries to steal the flag every year. Freakin' Oregon fans.

I have been to Steamboat (Musicfest) and still prefer Challis. Steamboat is a great ski town, but its just that...a ski town. Challis is a different settting all together, and it beats the hell out of seeing live music in a hotel ballroom. There are probably 2 or 3 times the number of bands at Steamboat, but I like that you don't have to make a decision in Challis on whether to go see Reckless Kelly or Wade Bowen because they play at the same time. Its as much the setting as it is the tunes.

Reckless always kills it. I've seen them 6-7 times. Never saw MMC or Hayes Carll. Both high on my list though.

This sounds awesome and I didn't know about it. Just moved up here 2 months ago, might have to plan on checking it out next year.
