Also, I will point out that Magneto and Charles Xavier's lifelong friendship despite being at literal war with one another is a lot easier to explain if there is a romantic/sexual component to it. It is certainly passionate and lifelong, and both men are romantically unentangled.
But it's a metaphor for homosexuality, not literal.
while i concede you can see some of this, how does the story involving raven/mystique fit into this?

Because I do not recognize First Class, as it was not directed by Bryan Singer. First Class, being set in the 60s, reverts to the original civil rights metaphor.

DoFP has the same relationship triangle

Certainly, but they are now playing in sandbox created by First Class. You can't entirely write that movie out. And do we really think Magento's interest in Raven is sexual? It's implied he never even thinks of her that way Charles also views Raven more paternalistically than romantically.

quote:Bro, I'm gonna go ahead and call out on this one. X2 did not have Angel, you're thinking of that awful third movie I will not speak of.
Mutant powers do not manifest until your teenage years in most cases. Hence the opening scene of X2 with Angel cutting his wings off. Or the entire Jean Grey plotline.

so you only want to pick and choose x1 and 2 then?
while i dont doubt that those movies may have some homosexual undertones, i dont think thats the focal point behind them nor the real message.

You're right. X-Men 3, which is admittedly terrible, is the one with the Angel scene. It's still a homosexual metaphor.
Well, the thread was about the first movie, so... yeah. I would like to sue the movie referenced. and First Class is clearly in a different setting, and it has a different director. It was an attempt to reboot the franchise. An attempt that failed, as they brought back in Singer and his sensibilities.
And Singer, to his credit, doesn't beat us over the head with the metaphor, but it's clearly there.

The actor who plays Nightcrawler is gay, though. Hugh Jackman has suffered from ridiculous rumors because he's friends with Singer.

Every gay man needs a bestie.

Depends really. Traumatic events, puberty and other things trigger then. Not necessarily age.

It also makes it a more clear analogy for homosexuality.
Race is the classic subject they are critiquing, not homosexuality.
Or better said: Difference, which manifests in both.

this.
and why does it matter what actors are gay? are we to take that as a direct correlation to the characters? because thats a little absurd. magneto in the comics is not gay. why does it matter if ian mckellen is?
