Are there any shows ever in Arkansas? I remember a few years ago there were rumors that Phish was going to play this new amphitheater out there. I can't remember the name. Maybe it started with a W?

Well as far as I can tell it was played by the dead for the first time in 1971, and then wasnt recorded by Jerry until 1978. Not sure that answers the question.

ETA: I read it wrong. Wasnt performed by the dead until 1991. So it was a Jerry song long before the dead played it.

Amazing song

That amphitheater didn't get off the ground. Phish has NEVER played Arkansas. WSP has played a few times. We have a new venue up in NWA (The Wal-Mart AMP), but it only seats like 7,000.

Back in the day, we used to get some really special shows because a guy named Harold was pretty deeply connected in the old school jamband scene and could get these amazing people (mentioned in post before) to play at small venues. That continues to some degree as Kimock still plays here frequently. Umphrey's does as well (one of their managers is a F'ville ex-pat and old tour buddy).

We never got the huge shows, though. We do host Wakarusa and YMSB's Harvest Festival out at Mulberry Mountain though. They're both pretty decent festivals.

But yeah, the Dead never played Arkansas, nor has Phish (yet).

Haha I read the same thing. I saw it was played by Jerry in 1977 and Grateful Dead performed in 1991. Truly is a beautiful song.

Simple Twist

Dylan should have been Jerry's songwriter instead of Robert Hunter.

I don't know about that, but when asked why he covered so much Dylan, Jerry said you don't feel like an idiot singing them.

If you've never seen the documentary film "Hells Angels Forever" try and find it. Lotsa Jerry interviews. Really good stuff.

This seems like as good as any place to ask this question:

Love me some JGB and love me some James Booker. I had no idea the two hooked up for a few shows in Palo Alto in 1976. I'm looking for the bootlegs and can't find them. Anybody got any really good sites for finding such things?

Here's the extent to what I've been able to find:

Booker and Garcia

Intersting article on the whole thing

JGB and James Booker

TIA

IIRC Bookerman tried to steal the show from Jer Bear and he wasn't feeling that. Fired on the spot after a few shows.

first time I heard tJGB pump out Dear Prudence, it became my favorite song.. and still is

and while I agree that Jerry did some amazing side projects,(probably more so imo than anybody but Jeff Lynn, but that is like comparing apple's and oranges.. but I'm starting to get way off base...)

What tGD did still can't truly be appreciated, and probably won't be for another twenty years when people finally become bored of commercial pop music.
