The difference is that this is a huge time for guys like Dempsey and Bradley. The league is booming,

And Donovan is a HUGE reason for that.

I completely agree. For years and years, the only player anyone that I knew could name on the team was Landon Donovan.

Then why are you making it a negative point that he stayed in the MLS and further established the domestic league?

I'm not saying that it is a bad thing. I'm saying that that's why I was critical of him. I personally wanted to see the best outfield player we've produced go up against the best talent in the world regularly. I love seeing fans in England gain respect for our players, and Everton loved him.

My personal thoughts on the matter have no effect on how integral he was to the growth of US Soccer and the MLS.

It just sounds like you are holding LD to an unfair standard because he didn't follow a specific career model.

I don't think I'm being unfair at all. I guess I'm just one of those people that never "got" Landon. He was never one of my favorite players. He was a great player, although I thought he could have been better if he didn't spend so much time in the MLS, and he had more talent than probably anyone we've ever had. However, I've always been a much bigger fan of other players.

I'm fine with this, but just be honest about your reasons for it.

Don't say it's because "he bitched out" and stayed in the MLS through one side of your mouth and say you're a Clint Mathis fan from the other side.

Timmy just posted this on Twitter.

My two favorite USMNT players of all time.

I'll be just as gutted when Tim hangs up his gloves.

That's another reason I'm really sad to see Landon retire. It means that the old guard is moving out, and players that I really love watching are going to start retiring left and right.

I'm just saying that's one reason why I wasn't a fan.

Yeah, I've felt that Landon was content in the fact he is the greatest American player of all time. It was a bit frustrating because I never got the feeling he wanted to be more than that when he had the potential to be more. Still, it's not set in yet. Even with his statement, the idea of not seeing Donovan in 10 for the Galaxy is almost unimaginable. No matter the reservations, he still deserves credit as the driving force for MLS and American soccer in general.

He is the Jesus of modern America soccer. Claudio and McBride are Abraham and Moses.

Once more for good measure, here's that "Burned by Donovan" video again.
