However, out of their songs remaining in relatively high rotation on classic rock radio today, The Song Remains The Same and Ramble On are 2 of the very best JPJ bass lines.

No love for The Lemon Song?

In my own case, I'm not crazy about it. But, I've gone on record (pardon the pun) - if I'm starting a rock and roll band from scratch, using any of the guys from history, I'm probably drafting JPJ first. He can play anything that makes musical sounds, solid professional, very low key - of course he had the usual vices of rock stars of that era but he never let them get out of control, affect either the music or the bottom line.

OT: Ace did you happen to catch JPJs work with Them Crooked Vultures back in 09-10??

Your last comment is the reason I ask because I never realized how much of a bad arse he was until then.

Now looking back threw LZ I enjoy them even more!!

Because of the construction of this song, it is a rare example of JPJ's bass work really standing out from the mix - but, as the true musical genius of the band (my high esteem for Page and Bonham, notwithstanding), Jones' bass work - throughout the Zeppelin catalogue was truly outstanding.

Some of his best work is hidden in the album tracks - Custard Pie and The Wanton Song as notable examples.

I've always been a fan of the funky sound he put out on The Crunge.

I hate to admit - and it ends up being a guilty pleasure - I prefer Chickenfoot to Them Crooked Vultures.

Mule doing Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy back in 2012 is legit. JPJ sat in with WH at the Xmas jam one year. All others need not apply when covering Zeppelin.

Tool's version of 'No Quarter' is outstanding.
