They always smell bad for some reason and they howl and bark all the time.

Smell bad? Bassetts and Bloodhounds stink, from what I heard. Never knew that about beagles.

There was a guy who lived down the street from me growing up who raised Beagles as hunting dogs. Those things always stunk to high heaven and would howl and bark for 30 minutes any time anyone came within 30 ft of their kennel. His house was right next door to the park and walking trail so people were walking by all day, meaning they were always howling.

My sister in law has one of these. They actually exist.

ETA: Havanese.

I have one too. Very smart dog. Very loyal. Minimal barking and great with kids.

IS NOT IN ANY WAY a guard dog. They love people, even strangers. But like to chill out most of the day and will play hard when you want it to and then chill when you want to watch football.

No Shedding. No dog smells.

I have a friend that used to breed them.

cool dogs.

If I go the tiny indoor dog route, what's the board's opinion on Westie's? Are they as annoying as Yorkie's or Chihuahua's?

The wife has a chihuahua now, it's not annoying at all, super sweet little dog with plenty of personality. I think (like pits) it's more in how they're raised than anything else. He barks when someone is at the door, but that's about it.

He sheds a lot though, so probably not an option for you.

Don't those shed a lot to keep inside? I know you can't have a pug outside in South Louisiana (they overheat too easily in the summer and freeze in the winter).

My wife and I have a Puggle (Beagle + Pug), he's an awesome dog, but he sheds something fierce. He's ok in the heat, not as bad as a Pug, but I doubt he'd be ok in So. La. in the summer for an extended period of time
