I have first hand experience with multiple DVTs. The blood test you speak of is to check for a factor 5 mutation which I have.

The discoloration and swelling may never go away - it is Post DVT Syndrome lots of people end up with dis looted legs afterwards. Compression socks during the clot would have helped potentially but afterwards it is what it is.

It sucks but is somewhat manageable. The only upside is because of my proven medical condition I have convinced my employers that on flights over 5 hours I have to be in business class or better.
