The standard Craig's List scam involves him sending you a check which includes shipping, and he asks you to put the shipping on your credit card, after all, he's included the cost in the check. You think you are being slick so you wait ten days for the check to clear, then the shipper takes the boat. Then the check comes back. A variation involves using Paypal as a medium in the scam.
Cash or wire transfer only.
Tip: your bank will NEVER guarantee that a check has cleared.

I don't trust people much and personally would only make the exchange in person...
I do have a couple of friends that restore and sell old cars for a living and they say that a hell of a lot of people do in fact buy cars and boats that are quite expensive without ever seeing the object in person...some have a local individual check it out for them, but lots just pay up and see it for the very first time when the shipper pulls up to their place...

People in Florida really like these. They sell for quite a bit more money there than anywhere else.

Tell him to send a Post Office Money Order. Cash it before shipping.

I thought post office money orders only go up to $750 or something like that?

My bad - looks like they do in fact only go up to $1000.
I didnt realize since I have not used one for an amount larger than that.

Most banks will issue cashiers check for free to account holders. Much better than a personal check and easier than wire transfer.

Wire transfer.
If he wires the money, you should be good. Only thing then would be a possible PITA if he's not happy when he gets it, but sounds like you did your job explaining and showing pics etc.
Honestly, sounds like more risk to him than you if money is wired.

Wire transfer is the only way to go.
If you are worried about sending your banking info then just open a separate checking acct and add $10 and use it for the wire.
The wire will cost him $25 to send and you will probably be charged $15 receiving fee as well.
