What are food stamps for? Housing? And all the other govt assistance programs for?

And no I'm not against free lunches in schools

So people can (barely) scrape by. Don't act like these assistance programs put people above the poverty line.

Your link is very one sided, regardless, we are taking about going hungry, not malnourishment. 2 totally separate things.

quote:

15.9 million children under 18 in the United States live in households where they are unable to consistently access enough nutritious food necessary for a healthy life.[i]

Can't access? Or don't eat properly? There's a difference.

I don't get why they're giving free lunch to non poors

If I had to guess I would say there is a percentage of kids who have trouble affording the lunch but do not qualify to get it for free.

I'll agree it is a little strange that they just said screw it it's free for everyone.

Honestly.....I just don't think they trust those parents to send their kids to school with lunch or money for lunch....

Wish it would have been like that when I was a kid. I was made fun of all the time because I was a free lunch kid. Back then you had to purchase these tickets beginning of the week and they punched a hole for each day. Free lunchers had a different color ticket than everyone else.

At my school the free lunchers had to stand in the back of the lunch line. Kind of messed up looking back on it.

Any kid going hungry sucks.

Never said it didn't. I think we are arguing about hungry vs malnourishment. Is malnourishment a problem? Absolutely. To correct that problem requires changing the ways people think and eat. I'm not sure throwing more money around fixes that. You have to educate. Therein lies the problem, IMO.

You are assuming that every kid that gets free lunch gets those things as well. That isn't always the case.

Again....you had many that wouldn't qualify for govt assistance like that...but would qualify for free lunch.

Who cares if it's an epidemic or not? One child starving is too much, especially when we have the capacity to make it so that doesn't happen.

Damn that sucks. We must have had a better system growing up in my town because we never knew for sure who was getting free lunch. I guess we could have seen them turn in the forms or something at school....even still I never saw anyone made fun of.

Why are you so hell bent on saying children don't go hungry in this country?

Kansas City school dist to give free lunches
quote:

Beginning this August, both districts will take advantage of a new federal provision that will give every one of their students free breakfast and lunch.

quote:

Qualifying districts with high percentages of students receiving food assistance can trade their loss in revenue for savings in the expensive paperwork and bureaucracy in managing lunch accounts — and simply feed all kids the same.

I didn't say they didn't, I focused on the word "many". Many is a lot, don't know an exact number, but when someone says that, it implies a large portion. Why are you so he'll bent on saying they do?
