Anyway, my answer is Gretzky's 215 points in a season. Goalies are so much bigger and more athletic now than in his heyday, and same with defensemen.
Just to give you an idea, Crosby led the league in points last year. That number? 104, less than HALF of Gretzky's record. The second-place points leader last season was Ryan Getzlaf, and he only had 87, about 2.5x less than Gretzky.

Nolan Ryan's walks record. He has 2795 walks, and #2, Steve Carlton has, 1833. That's over 50% more than the second guy on the list. It has never been remotely threatened.
Johnny Vander Meer's record for consecutive no hitters will never be broken. Maybe tied, but not broken.

Pretty much any old baseball pitching records:
Wins:511
Losses: 316
Shutouts: 110
Innings Pitched: 7,354
Complete Games: 749
Wins in Season: 59 (beast mode)
Losses in Season: 48 (rough year)
Etc...

And if he's reasonably close at 34 or 35, I could see him playing until he was 37 or so, even in a backup role, just to get the record.
What a crappy way to get the record. I didn't like how Emmitt Smith limped past breaking Payton's record. But whatever.

One you can write in stone is LSU's single season home run record. Might take teams 3 years to get to that number.

Damn, no votes for Barry Sanders's 2,628 yard season in 1988?

Only thing I don't like is knowing that Barry Sanders could have absolutely obliterated Payton's record.

Thought of a couple in college football:
Nebraska: 348 consecutive weeks in the AP Top 25 (1981-2002)
The closest are Florida State and Florida with 211 and 209, respectively, from approx. 1989-2002. Alabama currently only has about 16 years to go.
Also, Florida State's streak of 14 consecutive seasons ranked in the final AP Top 5 poll is also pretty impressive.

the last few years of Emmitt weren't very elite. I think if relatively healthy, AD could match 3.2 ypc or whatever that Emitt was putting up in Arizona.

However, Emmitt Smith's record is not in the same tier as these other records.
People discredit Smith as a RB, but he was a 1k yards rusher yearly for his loooong career. Pretty damn impressive

Tiger's 142 consecutive made cuts streak is pretty good.

Also, defense hadn't been invented in the 80s. Gretzky's records are insane. He has more assists than anyone else has points.
His 92 goals in a season is pretty unassailable as well. Only two players in THIS CENTURY have even scored 60, and Ovechkin topped out at 65.
Here's how crazy the points record: Gretzky has 8 of the top 10 scoring seasons of all time. The highest points in a season by someone not named Gretzky or Lemieux is Setve Yzerman in 1988... with 155. The highest mark this century is Joe f'n Thornton with 125. Which ranks 53rd all time.

he was a damn good workhorse, but people discredit him because his line was one of the best ever built and he didn't put on a show like Sweetness or Barry.

I'm not saying AD will get it or not. I hope he does, but I don't know. Anyway, the point I was making was that it need not be some crazy feat for him to get it. As I said, even if he plays seven more seasons and retires at 35 just like Emmitt did, he doesn't even need to average 1,200 yards per season to get the record. And that's a number that in his seven seasons so far, he hasn't hit only once.
My main point was just to say Smith's record shouldn't be included with the likes of others the OP mentioned (such as Nolan Ryan's or Cy Young's) or some of the others mentioned in this thread such as Wilt or Byron Nelson. The fact that we're even legitimately debating if AD has a shot at Smith's record means it shouldn't be included.

Nolan Ryan's walk record is more "impressive" than his strikeout record.
Unfortunately, a lot of baseball's records will not be challenged due to the changing nature of the game over a long period of time. Not that there is anything with the change, but there is less base stealing and less innings pitched (by individual starters) as well as extreme specialization that makes it more difficult to sustain anything for an extremely long period of time.

Just about any record by Gretzky.
Career assists, goals, points, and hat tricks.
