My advice to keep track of all the characters: find an org chart online. So many people are introduced so quickly, and I found it helped a great deal to understand how it all fit together, especially since the back story is alluded to and not explained.

I was dropped in right in the middle a year ago and... I don't know, maybe it was just the right episode but I was hooked and watched till the end of the season, constantly looking up Wikipedia and google when something confusing happened (spoiling myself to just about everything in the process)

The world GRRM created is so deep and interesting (like real world history on acid) that I would almost say it's spoiler proof (YES I know many will disagree) in that even knowing what's going to happen, I can't friggin wait to see HOW it happens.

Anyways, then I went back and watched the whole thing from season one to it's completion and knowing what's going to happen makes it almost like watching prequels.

I've only technically been spoiled on something major once but it didn't hamper my enjoyment at all. Unless someone tells you every single detail about how something goes down, it's still awesome.

And if you pay really close attention to the show, then a lot of things that some people consider "spoilers" aren't really spoilers at all.

First half of season 1 is slow but it's important to the show

Seasons 2-4 are some of the best tv in history

Bro, this is not the thread to post spoilers about the show. The OP clearly states he hasn't watched the show yet you dunce. Edit your post

I would edit that quickly man, the OP doesn't know any of that and he might not be as spoiler-proof as you were.

The only ones that aren't really spoilers are the red and purple weddings since social media exploded when it happened. It became like "ya know Dumbledore dies right"

No, those are deffinitly still spoilers

I didn't know about either of those things when I started watching last year. Stop projecting your watching experience onto others and let them enjoy the show without being spoiled

You may be right, I think the amount of time for a TV show is about 5 years from the series ending and 10 years for a movie.......means, never mind, forget everything I said about Dumbledore!

For a big TV show like GOT, there is no timeline.

Especially in a thread where someone explicitly stated that he's about to watch for the first time.

[Spoilers below]

Finished season 1. Although I want to binge watch it, my current schedule allows me to only go fast.

Anyway here are my thoughts after Season 1:

1. Characters:

- Somebody asked me to get familiar with the characters and get close to a few of them. Well, I was rooting was Ned Stark to get out of King's Landing alive, but too bad he got his head chopped off.

- I don't really care for any of the Starks in particular, but I guess they are the good guys. I hope Jon Snow does come back and join in the war against the Lannisters. He looks like he would be of great help to Robb, but he has swore his oath to the Nights watch...I wonder how he can get out of that.

- I don't know what to make of Daenerys, yet. Is the Khaleesi a good person or bad, I am not sure. But I have a feeling she is going to be important going forward given what happened with the fire and the dragons in the season finale.

- Absolutely lothe Joffrey. Hate the little shite. I hope he gets his comeuppance along with the Lannisters in Season 2.

2. Production:

- I read somewhere that the series is very hard to shoot and expensive.. It definitely shows in the quality. I love all the settings so far...looks so authentic. I just hope there is a huge naval battle scene at some point in the series.

3. Other thoughts:

- I watched with subtitles. It really helps understand the show better. There are a ton of characters introduced very quickly. Without subtitles I'd have taken longer to get their names and who they are.

- I am quite curious to see what actually lies beyond the Wall. It sounds very mysterious.

- Looking forward to the the next great winter to see how it affects the people and their decision making.

- I have no clue what will become of Dany and what she does with her remaining horse tribe.

- I'd like to see a map of the entire GoT world somewhere. Is this available?

So far I rate the season 9.5/10. It absolutely lives up to the hype.

Just as a curiosity, could you run down as much as you know about Roberts Rebellion off the top of your head at this point?

Robert's Rebellion:

Hmmm.... They allude to it at various points during the season. I know the Targaryens were the kings at some point. There was this deal with Robert marrying Ned's sister, but she dies for some reason (if it was explained I guess I missed it). And the Mad king later killed Ned's older brother and father before Jamie Lannister stabbed the Mad king. Apparently the rebellion came after that. There was a conversation about Robert being a good soldier but a bad king. To be honest with you, I wasn't really paying much attention to it until the latter part of the season. Was I supposed to be doing that? Is it important going forward?

Well Roberts rebellion effects pretty much every decision and plot in Game of Thrones, but it's my view that they don't do near enough to explain the Rebellion, so no it's not something you really "missed"...it was just missing from the show

I went back after I watched season 1 and read up on Robert's Rebellion. It helps explain a ton.

Here is a link to the wiki page that I looked up: LINK

Now I'm through episode 8 of season 2, and it's a lot easier to comprehend what all is going on.

I also went back and read up on some of the mythology/history of Westeros since I'm guessing that it'll give some insight into stuff like the white walkers and Daenerys' dragons (and the role they played with the Targaryens coming to power).

That's too boring

If he really wants to learn about it, he should watch comicbookgirl19s video about it. She's hot and explains it really well. Although I think some of her videos have season spoilers through certain seasons depending on when they came out
