You're asking me why someone I don't know is doing something. Why ask me and not them?

Im asking you to explain why you think redskins is a racial slur
Obviously the native americans at these high schools do not agree with you. Do you know more than them?

Dictionaries describe the word as "offensive," "insulting," "taboo," "disparaging," etc. A racial moniker fitting that description can be correctly labeled a racial slur.

This isn't my opinion--it's the English language.

so since a dictionary (written by a white guy) claims its offensive then its offensive?
the opinion of those whom are supposed to be offended isnt relevant in this case?

You don't seem to understand how dictionaries are compiled and how definitions are determined. I admit that I don't know everything about the process, but you seem not to have put any thought whatsoever to how it is done.

You're trying to have an argument in which I am not a participant.

The question in the OP was "Big stink over Redksins, they why are Edmonton Eskimos OK?"

The answer is that "Redskins," according to every English dictionary I've seen, is a slur and that "Eskimos" is not.

I only answered a question. Why a high school here and there uses the word doesn't concern or particularly interest me. If you're curious as to their reasons for using the word, you should ask them and not me.

It means it fits the definition of a racial slur, making it a racial slur.

You're debating the meaning of the word now?

I'm not for the redskins name change, but your point seems silly. Native Americans consist of hundreds of different tribes. I would expect there to be many with differing views on a wide variety of topics.

How can redskins be offensive when the people being called redskins gave themselves that moniker. It's be like black people calling the term African-American offensive when they came up with it.

Idiots today have no sense of history.

Because it was used negatively in American culture to portray Indians as salvages

Or another word that started off without negative meaning

The exact same could be said for other groups, such as african americans and hispanics, yet could your imagine the term ni**er or wetback being used as a school moniker? i couldnt.
The logical conclusion, in my mind, is that native americans are much less worried about that term than white folks are. in fact, at least a reasonable sized contingent of them see it as a term to take pride in.

Because, at worst, Eskimo = Indians. Not effing Redskins.
Native American groups have complained about Redskins for 50 years. But that's okay, it's a"pc".

Idiots today have no sense of history.

Idiots think that every member of an entire group thinks and opines exactly the same.
